Falcons Host Two MAC East Division Battles this Weekend

BGSU welcomes Akron, Ohio to town; Sunday is 'Senior Day' at Cochrane Field
The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, currently sitting in third place in the Mid-American Conference's East Division standings, returns to intra-divisional play this weekend ... the Falcons of head coach Andy Richards will host the second- and fourth-place teams in the East, beginning with a Friday (Oct. 15) game against the University of Akron ... kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field ... the Zips currently reside in fourth place in the East ... then, on Sunday (Oct. 17), the Brown and Orange will face Ohio University, in a 1:00 p.m. start ... the Bobcats are one point ahead of Bowling Green in the divisional race.

SENIOR DAY
Sunday's match against Ohio, the final weekend home game of the regular-season schedule, will be 'Senior Day' at Cochrane Field, as the team's four seniors will be recognized in pregame ceremonies ... the festivities will begin at approximately 12:40 p.m. ... the senior class includes co-captains Alicia Almond and Katie Stephenson, along with Alexa Arsenault and Jackie Tamerlano.
FREE ADMISSION
As part of BGSU's Centennial celebration, admission to all home Falcon soccer regular-season matches in the 2010 season is free ... following this weekend's two home matches, BGSU will have one remaining regular-season contest at Cochrane Field ... the Falcons will host Miami on Thursday, Oct. 28.

LAST WEEKEND
The Falcons suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Toledo on a controversial goal Friday afternoon (Oct. 8) in the Glass City, then battled Ball State to a 3-3 tie Sunday (Oct. 10) in Muncie ... at UT, the Rockets' Ana Reynolds was credited with a goal two-thirds of the way through the match, which proved to be the winning tally ... senior Alexa Arsenault made eight saves in goal for the Falcons ... at BSU, sophomore Keely Chandler scored late in the first half, and senior Jackie Tamerlano's goal early in the second period gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead ... after BSU came roaring back with three goals in a span of less than 20 minutes, junior Alyssa Zuccaro scored on a rebound with under eight minutes left ... the teams combined for no fewer than 48 shots in the match.
LEADERS OF THE MAC
The Falcons are well-represented in the MAC statistics ... junior Alyssa Zuccaro is tied for first in the conference in both goals (eight) and points (20), while classmate Megan Amann is tied for fourth in the MAC in assists (five) ... senior Alexa Arsenault is fourth in the league in saves, with 51, while sophomore Sarah VonderBrink is deadlocked for fifth in game-winning goals, with two ... in conference games only, Zuccaro is tied for first in goals (five) and ranks second in points (12), while Amann is tied for second in assists (three) ... Arsenault is third in the league in saves in MAC games (35) and is tied for fourth in shutouts, with two against conference foes.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
• BGSU enters Friday's Akron match with an overall record of 4-9-2, and the Falcons are 2-3-1 in Mid-American Conference play ... BG is currently in third place in the MAC's East Division, three points behind first-place Miami and one point in back of second-place Ohio (teams earn three points for a win and one for a tie in MAC games).
• The Falcons' non-conference opponents included two teams each from the Big East, Big Ten and Atlantic 10 conferences ... BGSU started the season by going 0-5-1, then won four of the next five games before going 0-3-1 in the last four games ... BG is 3-6-0 at home and 1-3-2 on the road ... in MAC play, the Falcons are 3-1-0 at Cochrane Field and 0-2-1 away from home.
• Individually, junior Alyssa Zuccaro leads the team with 20 points on the year, including eight goals – nearly triple the total scored by any BGSU player last year ... senior co-captain Katie Stephenson and freshman Madeline Wideman have eight points apiece, while sophomore Sarah VonderBrink has scored seven points ... junior Megan Amann's five points all have come on assists, as she leads the team in the latter category.
• Each of the team's three goalkeepers – fifth-year senior Alexa Arsenault, redshirt sophomore Becca Ison and true sophomore Laura Arnold – started at least one match in non-conference play ... Arsenault has started 11 matches, including each of the last 10 ... she leads the Falcons in minutes played (1012:16), saves (61), shutouts (two) and goals-against average (1.51) ... Arnold has played in five games, starting three ... she has 14 saves and a 2.97 GAA in 242-plus minutes ... Ison has played just over 147 minutes, and has seven stops and a 2.44 GAA.
• Head coach Andy Richards, in his 11th season at the helm, welcomed back a total of 17 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's club ... BGSU's returning players combined for over 81 percent of the team's goals and 76% of the assists a year ago ... eight of the top-nine scorers returned from a season ago ... Amann paced the Falcons with nine points last fall, including two goals and a team-high five assists ... additionally, all three goalkeepers returned from last season's roster ... Arsenault started 17 of the Falcons' 20 matches between the posts last fall, while Arnold made three starts.
FALCON COACH ANDY RICHARDS
BGSU head coach Andy Richards, in his 11th season at the helm, has proven himself to be one of the most successful mentors in MAC women's soccer history ... he has guided the Falcons to an overall record of 102-105-24, and a record of 55-52-13 in MAC regular-season play ... he picked up the 100th victory of his collegiate head-coaching career in the Falcons' 3-2 win at Indiana State earlier this season (Sept. 19) ... Richards' teams perennially play one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the MAC ... in his first 10 years in BG, he led the Falcons to the MAC Tournament on eight occasions, with the team advancing to the semifinals seven times ... BGSU is 10-5-5 in MAC Tournament matches during his tenure, and no coach has more trips to the league tourney title game than Richards' five ... two of those appearances – in 2004 and 2005 – resulted in MAC Tournament titles and trips to the NCAA Championships ... Richards and the Falcons also won the '05 regular-season crown ... a native of Warwick, England, Richards earned his Bachelor of Education degree from Sheffield City Polytechnic in 1989 ... he received his Master of Education degree from Oregon State in 1997.
OFFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT
• The Falcon offense has enjoyed much success over the past few weeks ... BGSU scored just five goals over the season's first eight games, but the Falcons then scored 12 times in the next four contests ... BG has scored 15 times over the last seven games.
• Last year, BGSU scored a total of 16 goals in 20 games, including just seven goals in 11 MAC matches ... this fall, the Falcons have scored 20 times, and BGSU has 12 goals over the first six MAC games.
• The Falcons have scored at least three goals in a game four times this season, after doing so only once during all of 2009.
YOU CAN'T SPELL 'GOALZ' WITHOUT 'Z'
Junior Alyssa Zuccaro has become one of the top offensive threats in the MAC ... she had her eighth goal of the season in Sunday's (Oct. 10) game at Eastern Michigan ... 'Z' leads the team and is tied for the MAC lead in both goals and points (20) this season to date.
A FEW MORE NOTES ABOUT ALYSSA ZUCCARO
Junior Alyssa Zuccaro has had a great deal of involvement in the Falcons' offensive output over the past several games ... a few more notes about 'Z' ...
• As mentioned, Zuccaro leads the Falcons in both goals (eight) and points (20) ... she is tied for second on the team with four assists.
• Zuccaro's goal and point totals are the highest by a BGSU player since 2005 ... that season, Samantha Meister had eight goals and 22 points as the Falcons won the MAC regular-season and tournament titles.
• Zuccaro scored 10 points (four goals, two assists) in BGSU's first three MAC games of the season ... last year, no Falcon had more than four points in conference play, covering 11 games ... 'Z' has 12 points in six league games this fall.
• 'Z' scored 15 points over four matches, a school record for points in a four-match span ... she had a then career-high five points in the Indiana State game (Sept. 19), then topped that total with six points on a hat trick vs. Buffalo (Sept. 24) ... Zuccaro assisted on the game-winning goal vs. Kent State (Sept. 26), and had a three-point match at Eastern Michigan.
• With her performances in the Indiana State and Buffalo games, Zuccaro became the first Falcon to score five goals over a two-game span in over six years.
• Zuccaro shattered her goal and point totals for all of last season ... as mentioned, she has 20 points, on eight goals and four assists ... Zuccaro totalled seven points in the 2009 season, with a pair of goals and three assists.
• Zuccaro has scored more than twice as many points as any Falcon had during all of '09 ... Megan Amann led last year's club with a total of nine points ... Zuccaro's total of eight goals on the year is nearly triple the total amassed by any BGSU player last fall (two Falcons had three goals apiece in 2009).
• Zuccaro, BG's active career scoring leader, now has 38 career points ... she sits in ninth place on the school's career list ... 'Z' ranks eighth on the BG list for career goals, with 15.

• 121-139-28 in the history of the program, which began in 1997;
• 62-69-17 in Mid-American Conference regular-season matches;
• 42-31-12 vs. MAC schools over the last six-plus seasons (including regular-season & tourney matches), and 34-26-10 vs. league foes in the last five-plus years;
• 64-59-11 at home, and 34-20-5 at Cochrane Field in the last five-plus seasons;
• 15-9-3 at Cochrane since the start of the '08 season;
• 49-70-15 in road contests in program history;
• 8-10-2 all-time in neutral-site matches;
• 50-61-12 in the month of October through the years;
• 45-41-9 in October games in the Andy Richards Era;
• 50-1-3 in the last 54 games when scoring first (20-0-2 since the start of 2008); and

THE ZIPS / THE BGSU-AKRON SERIES
Akron has an overall record of 3-10-0, and the Zips will bring a 1-5-0 MAC record into Friday's match at BGSU ... UA is looking to snap a three-game losing streak, including home losses to Northern Illinois (0-1; Oct. 8) and Western Michigan (1-3; Oct. 10) last weekend ... the Zips' MAC win was a 3-1 triumph over Ball State (Oct. 1) ... UA is 0-4-0 on the road this year to date, including 0-2 in MAC road matches ... Leigh Cullen has eight points to lead a balanced scoring attack, while Katie Wise has seven points ... Cullen and Wise are tied for the team lead with three goals apiece ... Jeny Wolbert has played in all 13 matches in goal this year, and has 60 saves, one shutout and a goals-against average of 2.06 ... head coach Chris Pfau is in his third season in Akron ... he guided the 2009 team to a 9-7-2 overall mark and a 7-3-1 conference ledger ... the school's athletics web site is www.gozips.com.
The Falcons lead Akron, 7-2-0, in the all-time series between the teams, but the Zips captured last year's meeting ... UA's Liz Cloutier scored with just 1:09 left in the second half to give her team a 2-1 win at Cochrane Field (Oct. 11, 2009) ... that snapped a two-game series winning streak for the Falcons ... BGSU won the first five games vs. the Zips, but the teams have split the last four meetings ... prior to last year, UA's lone win at come in Akron in 2006 ... the Falcons have a 4-1-0 home record vs. the Zips.
THE BOBCATS / THE BGSU-OHIO SERIES
Ohio has a record of 5-5-3 on the season ... the Bobcats are 2-2-2 in the MAC, good for second place in the East Division, heading into a Friday game vs. Miami ... the 'Cats are unbeaten over the last three games ... Ohio tied Western Michigan, 1-1, last Friday (Oct. 8), before topping Northern Illinois, 3-2, two days later ... the 'Cats are 2-3-2 in road games this year, including a mark of 0-1-1 in MAC games away from Athens ... Ohio has scored 14 goals and allowed 15 through the first 13 matches ... Rachael Philpot and Katie Kemen each have seven points, while Toye Famodu and Cathryn Rogers have six points apiece ... Philpot leads the team with three goals, while Rogers paces the Bobcats with four assists ... in goal, Mattie Liston has played every minute, and has 69 saves, four shutouts and a GAA of just 1.10 ... The Falcons trail Ohio, 8-2-3, in that series, but BGSU is unbeaten in the teams' last three meetings ... all three of those games have required double overtime ... last fall, the Falcons and Bobcats battled to a 1-1 draw at Cochrane Field (Oct. 9, 2009) ... Katelyn Turner scored the Falcons' goal, and hit the post with a shot in the second OT period ... overall, BGSU has gone 3-1-1 over the last five meetings with Ohio, after going just 0-7-1 in the first eight matchups with the Bobcats ... the Falcons are 2-4-1 in home games vs. the 'Cats, but BG is 2-0-1 in the last three meetings at Cochrane.
FALCON FIRSTS
Two Falcons scored their first goals of the season in the Ball State game ... sophomore Keely Chandler had the first goal of the afternoon, while senior Jackie Tamerlano found the back of the net for the first time in 2010, scoring early in the second half ... freshman Kaitlyn Tobin's assist on Chandler's goal was the first point of her collegiate career.
WORKING OVERTIME
After Sunday's (Oct. 10) Ball State match, the Falcons now have an all-time record of 18-15-28 in overtime matches ... here are a few more fascinating facts regarding BGSU and OT contests ...
• Believe it or not, the Falcons have lost just once in 23 all-time overtime games on the road ... BG now has a record of 7-1-15 in road OT matches ... BGSU is 9-12-11 in overtime games played at Cochrane Field, and 2-2-2 all-time in neutral-site OT affairs.
• The Cincinnati match (Aug. 22) earlier this year snapped BGSU's unbeaten streak in OT matches at 13 ... the Falcons went 4-0-9 in that stretch ... prior to the UC contest, the team's last overtime loss was at Ball State on Oct. 19, 2007 ... that BSU match is still the only OT loss in a road game in program history.
• BG's latest OT unbeaten streak had lasted for nearly three years ... the Falcons once went nearly four years without an overtime loss, going 5-0-5 in that time ... after an OT setback vs. Ohio State on Halloween of 2003, the Falcons did not allow a 'Golden Goal' until Sept. 14, 2007, vs. Wright State.
• Beginning with that WSU game, the Falcons were winless in four consecutive OT matches (0-3-1), before a win at Miami (Oct. 21, 2007) began the recently-ended 13-match unbeaten streak.
EXTRA TIME (A FEW FINAL FALCON NOTES)
The Falcons and Ball State combined for 48 shot attempts in Sunday's game, the highest two-team total in over seven years ... the last time BG and the foes combined to take so many shots was on Oct. 12, 2003 ... on that date, BGSU outshot Northern Illinois by a 33-18 count in DeKalb • BGSU's totals of 21 shots attempted and 11 shots on goal were season highs ... Ball State's 27 shots and 13 SOG represented season-high totals for a Falcon opponent • Sunday's game in Muncie also marked the first time both teams had over 20 shots in a game since a 2003 contest vs. Eastern Illinois (BGSU 22 shot attempts, EIU 20 on Sept. 5, 2003) • additionally, it was the first time both BG and the opponents hit double digits in shots on goal in nearly six years (BGSU 12 SOG, Kent State 10 in an Oct. 15, 2004 game in Kent).
