LAST TIME OUT ...
Last weekend, Bowling Green Hockey took its first road trip of the season to Potsdam, N.Y. - home of the Clarkson Golden Knights (2-2-0). Friday night the Knights defended their castle with a 4-0 shutout of the Falcons. Nick Eno (Howell, Mich.) stopped 27-of-31 shots against on the night but the Falcons could not help their senior netminder offensively. Eno stopped ten shots in both the second and third periods, but two Clarkson goals in the first and third periods stood in the way of a win. In Saturday's rematch the script was flipped as the host Knights sported the goose egg when the Falcons blanked them, 3-0. One member of the sophomore, junior and senior classes contributed toward the goal scoring when Marc Rodriguez (Aurora, Ill.), James McIntosh (Holland Landing, Ontario) and David Solway (Green Bay, Wisc.) all hit the back of the net in the victory. In the meantime, sophomore goaltender Andrew Hammond (Surrey, British Columbia) recorded his first career win in 14 decisions while acquiring his first shut out wearing Brown and Orange. He stopped all 31 shots he faced, including having been peppered with 14 shots on goal in the first period. He helped the BGSU penalty kill stop all four power play chances CU had.
THE STARTING FIVE - Five Facts On BGSU Hockey
(1) The Falcons are five wins away from achieving 800 wins in the program's 41-year varsity history. They defeated Clarkson University, 3-0, for win #795 on Oct. 16. BGSU is 795-697-100 all-time.
(2) Shutting out Clarkson on Saturday marks the first time since Jan. 16, 2009 (at Michigan, 3-0) that the Falcons had blanked an opponent on the road. The last time BGSU shutout an opponent at the Ice Arena was on 2/21/09 vs. Michigan State. Bowling Green has not shutout a non-conference opponent at home since beating Colgate, 4-0, on Jan. 3, 2006.
(3) Hockey SID Ryan Gasser is now 1-0-0 when broadcasting Falcon hockey. In his debut on Oct. 15 while serving as color analyst to Everett Fitzhugh, the Falcons shutout Clarkson 3-0. Just saying ...
(4) In nine different weekend sets last year, the Falcons faired worse in game two of a series. In two weekends, the Falcons have either closened the scoring margin or turned a “L” into a “W” in both series this year.
(5) Former Falcon great and future NHL Hall of Famer Rob Blake will be returning to Bowling Green on Nov. 6 when the Falcons play the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. For more details, please visit BGSUFalcons.com and click on the hockey homepage.
