BGSU Completes First Day of Second Chance

The Bowling Green State University tennis team completed the first day of the ITA Second Chance, the Falcons' final fall tournament of the season. Head coach Penny Dean's club went 3-1 in singles play and 2-2 in doubles action on Friday.

The tournament, hosted by Western Michigan, continues through Sunday (Oct. 24) at the West Hills Athletic Club. In addition to the Falcons and the host Broncos, the tournament participants include players from Chicago State, UIC, Marquette, Michigan State, Northern Illinois and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The ITA Second Chance features two singles draws and one doubles bracket.
On Friday, sophomore Maddy Eccleston picked up a victory over Kelly Phillips of NIU in the first round of the Black Flight. Eccleston's 6-3, 6-3 win set up a second-round match with WMU's Mila Shustova.
Marquette's Olga Ficsher topped Falcon freshman Nikki Chiricosta in first-round action in the Black Flight, winning in a three-set battle. Chiricosta will play a consolation-round match vs. UWM's Kristen Kurrer on Saturday (Oct. 23).
Sophomore Mary Hill won by default over Marquette's Chelsea Utting on Friday, and will face UIC's Ilinca Cristescu in second-round action at the Black Flight.
Two Falcons competed in the Gold Flight, as senior Christine Chiricosta downed NIU's Sara McLaughlin in three sets, while freshman Emily Reuland swept UWM's Maddy Soule. Chiricosta will meet UIC's Elisa Simonetti, while Reuland will face WMU's April Kerr on Saturday.
In doubles, each BGSU team went 1-1, posting a first-round win before fallilng in the second round. Christine Chiricosta and Eccleston downed a UWM team by an 8-4 outcome, before dropping an 8-5 decision to a duo from Marquette.
Nikki Chiricosta and Hill teamed up for an 8-3 win over a Marquette tandem, but fell by a narrow 8-6 final to a UIC team.
The tournament continues on Saturday, with play scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
