With the win, the RedHawks improve to 12-6-2 overall, and MU ends the regular season with a MAC record of 5-4-2. The 'Hawks won the league's East Division and earned the No. 2 seed for the upcoming conference tournament.
The Falcons see the season come to an end with records of 4-12-4 overall and 2-6-3 in MAC play.
Seniors Katie Stephenson and Jackie Tamerlano scored goals in their final game at BGSU, while fifth-year senior goalkeeper Alexa Arsenault made six saves in net. Despite the scoreline, Arsenault played well in goal, saving a Miami penalty-kick try and making several other difficult stops.
Thursday's game featured several wild swings of momentum. Miami scored with 12.4 seconds left in the first half, just seconds after BGSU had had a scoring chance at the other end of the field.
The Falcons scored their two goals just over four minutes apart early in the second period, taking a 2-1 lead with just under 28 minutes left in regulation. And, Arsenault then made a spectacular diving stop to deny Jess Kodiak on a penalty-kick try with 20 minutes left.
But, Katy Dolesh scored to tie the game with 14:49 remaining, and a goal from Dani Fraelick gave MU the lead with 12:27 on the clock. With the Falcons pushing forward to try to get the equalizer, the RedHawks scored twice more in a span of 1:28 to salt the game away.
On a windy day at Cochrane Field, it appeared the RedHawks had scored with less than three minutes elapsed. Sarah Dessfelt's free kick found the head of Kodiak, who nodded the ball into the net with roughly 2:36 gone in the match. But, the assistant referee's flag was raised indicating offside against MU, and the score remained nil-nil.
Arsenault made her first save of the day, and also her first acrobatic save of the day, with a diving stop of a volley by the RedHawks' Haley Clark with six-and-a-half minutes gone in the match. Six minutes later, Arsenault made a diving stop on Kodiak's right-side shot.
Midway through the period, the visitors had another solid chance, but Kayla Zakrzewski's shot was blocked after she received Kodiak's cross in the penalty area.
Just under 20 minutes remained in the half when the Falcons had a solid scoring chance of their own. Senior Alicia Almond played the ball to freshman Madeline Wideman, who hit a crossing ball into the box. Stephenson met the cross with a diving header, but the shot was just wide left.
With five minutes left before halftime, freshman Ashley Miller crossed the ball from the right side of the pitch, and classmate Ivi Casagrande headed it back across the box to the waiting Katelyn Turner. The junior settled the ball and fired, but her shot sailed left of the target.
Only 30 seconds remained before the intermission when the Falcons moved the ball upfield. Stephenson and Tamerlano were part of the buildup, and freshman Melissa Zeigler hit a diagonal ball into the area toward Turner. Turner, running with a Miami player, was able to get a touch on the ball, but it rolled directly to MU goalkeeper Madison Ryan.
Quickly, the RedHawks countered, taking the ball into the other end of the pitch, and the visitors got on the scoreboard with only 12.4 seconds left in the period. After Arsenault stopped Dolesh's effort, Giselle Mangal poked the ball into the net for a 1-0 MU lead at the intermission.
Nearly a third of the way through the second half, Casagrande played a ball forward, with the pass finding sophomore Sarah VonderBrink. 'Vondy' took the ball into the penalty area and, with an MU player on either side of her, was taken down in the box.
A penalty kick was awarded, and Stephenson made no mistake, burying her shot in the corner of the net. The Falcons had equalized at the 58:20 mark.
Four minutes later, the Falcons were celebrating again. This time, Casagrande passed the ball to junior Alyssa Zuccaro. 'Z' made a nifty move to get past a defender, and made a long run into the box. With three RedHawks in pursuit, she crossed the ball toward the far post. Tamerlano got to that cross and hit a shot toward net that eluded Ryan. An MU defender knocked the ball away, but it had already crossed the end line. With 27:24 remaining, the home team had the lead.
Seven minutes later, however, a Miami shot off of a cross hit the arm of a Falcon defender in the box, and a PK was awarded at the other end of the field. Kodiak took the shot for the RedHawks, but Arsenault made a dive to her right, deflecting the ball away from the post, and BGSU cleared the ball out of bounds.
Still, the RedHawks kept coming. Dolesh had two shots just over a minute apart, with one blocked and one sailing over the bar. Then, with under 18 minutes left, Dolesh sprung teammate Sara Lund with a through ball. Lund, with a step on her defender, took the ball into the penalty area and fired a shot, but Arsenault came through with another stellar stop.
But, Dolesh would score with just under 15 minutes left, knotting the game at 2-2. A cross was headed out of the box by a Falcon defender, but Dolesh settled the ball and fired it into the upper half of the net.
And, just over two minutes later, Fraelick gave the RedHawks the lead. BGSU, needing a win to have a chance to qualify for the MAC Tournament, began pressing forward in an attempt to generate more goals, and Lund capitalized with 7:55 remaining. She deked a Falcon defender and fired a shot home for a 4-2 advantage.
Kodiak closed the scoring just over a minute later, receiving a cross from Zakrzewski and converting from approximately six yards out to give her team a 5-2 advantage.
The RedHawks held an 18-7 advantage in total shots, including a margin of 11-4 in shots on goal. As mentioned, Arsenault had a solid game, with six saves in her final match as a Falcon. Ryan made two stops for the 'Hawks.
Thursday's match marked the final game at BGSU for four seniors. The senior class consists of co-captains Almond and Stephenson, along with Arsenault and Tamerlano.
