Brown Clinches World Series as Falcons Wrap Up Offseason Play
October 07, 2010 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – In the BGSU Baseball team's annual Brown vs. Orange World Series held earlier this week initial indications are that run production will still be the name of the game for Bowling Green next season. The Brown squad took the first two games of the off-season, intrasquad World Series, giving them this year's bragging rights over the Orange squad, but both teams showed promise at the plate scoring a total of 33 runs in two games between the teams.
In Game One of the three game set the Brown team used a six-run second inning to help propel themselves to a 10-8 victory in the six-inning series opener. Taylor Rhoades (Wheaton, Ill.) and Drew Kuns (Oregon, Ohio) each hit a home run in the second inning accounting for five of the six runs scored in the frame.
The Orange Team stormed back with a five-run inning in the top half of the third, closing the gap to a single run, but the brown team prevailed in the end.
Kuns finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate for the Brown Team though the Orange squad had many notable performers, as well. Senior Frank Berry (Virginia Beach, Vir.) finished the day with a triple and a single while teammate Jon Berti (Troy, Mich.) legged out two extra-base hits with a triple and a double. Freshman Logan Walker (Richmond, Vir.) notched two doubles on the day and junior left-handed pitcher, Patrick Martin (Oregon, Ohio) also pitched in at the dish with a multiple hit day.
Game One (six innings): Brown 10, Orange 8
WP: Michael Frank, LP: Charles Wooten
Game Two had much of the same tone as the series opener with the Brown Team jumping out to an early 6-0 lead after two innings of play. The second inning was highlighted with an Andrew Kubuski (Elyria, Ohio) two-run home run as a part of a five-run second inning for the Brown.
Orange retaliated with a pair of runs in the their half of the second inning with a Matt Vannett (Bowling Green, Ohio) two-run shot, but could no further damage to sophomore Patrick O'Brien (Boardman, Ohio). The Orange Team battled back with a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth inning, highlighted by a Patrick Martin two-run triple. Levi Fisher (Bryan, Ohio) sealed the win for the Brown Team with a scoreless fifth inning ending the game and the series with a 9-6 score.
Fisher also tallied a pair of singles in the game for the Brown squad. Three additional Brown members had multiple-hit days including Kubuski, Rhoades and Clay Duncan (Norwalk, Ohio). Rhoades' stat line included a pair of two-baggers and a single.
Game Two (five innings): Brown 9, Orange 6
WP: Patrick O'Brien, LP: Cody Apthorpe, SV: Levi Fisher
Though the series winner has been determined after two games, Brown and Orange will meet again in one final intrasquad scrimmage today at 3:15 p.m. EST at Warren Steller Field.
