Oxford, Ohio – The Bowling Green volleyball team let the opening set slip away and the Falcons were unable to recover in a 27-25, 25-17, 25-21 loss to Miami (Ohio) Thursday night in a Mid-American Conference match.
The Falcons outhit Miami by attacking at a .252 rate and had 10.0 blocks for just the fourth time this year but the RedHawks staved off two set points in the opening frame and held off a furious third-set comeback by Bowling Green. The Falcons, however, had just two service aces and 10 service errors to go with four ball handling errors.
Eight of Bowling Green's 10 blocks came in the first set as the Falcons jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Back-to-back kills by Noelle Spitler gave Bowling Green a 10-2 lead but Miami clawed back to tie the score at 22-22. Kari Galen had a kill and a block to put the Falcons up 24-22 but the RedHawks scored three in a row to take the lead. A Paige Penrod kill tied the score at 25-25 but Miami completed the comeback with consecutive kills for the 27-25 win.
Bowling Green struggled throughout much of the second set, never making a run, and those difficulties lingered into the third set. Miami jumped out to a 17-8 lead but the Falcons energetically stormed back. Two kills by Kaitlyn Skinner made it 17-11 and forced Miami to use a timeout.
Coming out of the break, Lauren Mizgalski, Lindsey Butterfield and Skinner added kills to make it 17-14. After a Bowling Green service error, the Falcons tied the score on a Butterfield kill followed by three straight Mizgalski kills.
With the score tied at 18-18, Miami regained its composure. The RedHawks had kills on six of their final seven points for the 25-21 win.
Paige Penrod had a team-high 14 kills but the Falcons struggled to find a second consistent offensive threat with Danielle Tonyan out of the lineup with an injury. Galen finished with six kills and was dominant defensively with six blocks. Mizgalski finished with five kills and Madison Nitta tied for the team-high with eight digs.
Miami improved to 10-16 overall and 5-8 in MAC play. Bowling Green falls to 8-20 on the year and 2-11 in conference action. The Falcons will play at Northern Illinois Saturday at 7 p.m.
