Almond, Stephenson earn conference honor yet again
Bowling Green State University's women's soccer co-captains have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team for 2010. Seniors Alicia Almond and Katie Stephenson each were repeat selections to the team, which was announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon (Dec. 1).
Stephenson makes the team for the third consecutive year, having earned the honor in each of the three years she has been eligible for nomination. Almond also makes the team for a third-straight season, having earned honorable mention as a sophomore.
Almond and Stephenson become the first student-athletes in BGSU women's soccer history to be named to the Academic All-MAC Team three times.
Almond maintains a 3.96 cumulative grade-point average as a health science major, while Stephenson, a finance major, has a 3.70 cumulative GPA.
Almond, a native of Findlay, Ohio (Findlay H.S.), started all 20 matches for the Falcons in 2010. She was on the field for 1901 of the 1908 total minutes this season. A central defender in '10, Almond had three assists on the year, including the first two-assist game of her career against Xavier. She also had an assist in the Falcons' win at Indiana State.
For her career, Almond played in a total of 67 matches, making 41 starts. She had 10 career points, on three goals and four assists. Almond was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District First Team last month, after being named to the third team in 2009.
Stephenson, a native of Lexington, Ohio (Lexington H.S.), was second on the team in goals in 2010. One of just five BGSU players to start all 20 matches, Stephenson was second on the Falcons (behind her fellow co-captain) in minutes played, with 1851.
Stephenson had four goals on the year, and tied for second on the club with 11 points in her senior season. She had goals against Xavier, Cleveland State, Eastern Michigan and Miami. Stephenson had a three-point game vs. CSU, assisting on teammate Sarah VonderBrink's late winner, and also had a three-point day at EMU, with an assist on the Falcons' final goal of the day. Her other assist came against Akron.
For her career, Stephenson had 27 points, with nine goals and nine assists.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify for nomination, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior-college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
