TALLAHASSEE, Florida—With the first day of games at the Sunshine State Classic under wraps, the Bowling Green State University softball team started off the season with two losses at JoAnne Graf Field. The Falcons fell to by No. 19/23 Florida State, 0-9, and Southern Mississippi, 3-5.
Falcons vs. Seminoles in a Mid-Morning Matchup
With the weather finally in agreement with the tournament schedule, Coach Salsburg and the Falcons (0-1) were finally able to play their first game of the tournament this morning (Feb. 13) against the nationally ranked Florida State Seminoles (2-1). The Falcons fell to the 'Noles, 0-9, in five innings.
Freshman Andrea Arney recorded her first career hit as a Falcon while also posting one of only two hits by the Falcons, with a single to centerfield in the fourth. Rachel Proehl tabbed the Falcons second hit of the game.
Defensively, the Falcons kept the Seminoles scoreless in the first inning.
On the first day of the tournament, (Feb. 11) FSU fell to Southern Mississippi, 2-1. Following FSU's game against the Falcons, the Seminoles upended Iona College, 9-1.
Falcons vs. Golden Eagles in a Battle of the Bats
In their second game of the day, the Falcons (0-2) met the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (3-0) on the diamond, in what turned out to be a battle of the bats. Although the Falcons and the Golden Eagles each held each other to seven hits, in the end, USM defeated BGSU 5-3.
Recording hits on the Falcon's end was Hannah Fulk, Rachel Proehl, Melissa West, Susan Sontag, Melissa Bott and two for Andrea Arney.
On the defensive end, the Falcons held the Golden Eagles scoreless in the first, second and third innings. In the fourth inning, USM scored its first three runs, a lead which would remain for the rest of the game. The Golden Eagles ran in for two more runs, adding one to the scoreboard in the fifth and their fifth and final run in the sixth inning.
The Falcons went scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when they scored all three of their runs. Rounding the bases for the Falcons was Andrea Arney, Karmen Coffey and Susan Sontag. Sontag recorded the Falcon's sole triple of the game while Andrea Arney had the team's sole RBI.
On the day, Andrea Arney was at bat five times, had three hits, one run and one RBI.
"We learned a lot about ourselves today," Head Coach Shannon Salsburg said. "The team did a nice job of rebounding back after the Florida State game. We made adjustments and put ourselves in a place to win against Southern Mississippi."
The Falcons resume play on Valentine's Day (Feb. 14), the final day of the tournament, with back-to-back games against Iona College (9:00 a.m.) and a second game against Florida State (3:35 p.m.).
