With the win, the Falcons improve to 20-6 overall and 10-2 in MAC play. BGSU has won at least 20 games for the seventh consecutive season. The Bobcats drop to 6-19 and 2-10, respectively.
Junior Lauren Prochaska had a game-high 22 points, while freshman Allison Papenfuss had the finest game of her young career, with a career-high 13 points and six rebounds. Papenfuss made five of her seven shots from the field.
Prochaska also led all players in rebounding, with nine boards as the Falcons had a 35-28 advantage on the glass.
Carolyn Barnett led the Bobcats with 14 points off the bench, while Thia Gholson had 12.
The first half of the game featured six ties and four lead changes. The final lead change of the day came when a Papenfuss layup gave BG a 31-30 lead and sparked a 10-0 run. BGSU scored those 10 points in a span of just 1:43, culminating with a half-court shot by senior Tamika Nurse at the buzzer.
Leading by a 39-30 count at the half, the Brown and Orange saw Ohio score five quick points to begin the second period. But, a second 10-0 run gave the hosts a 49-35 advantage with just over 17 minutes left in the game, and the Bobcats never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Junior Tracy Pontius had nine points for the Falcons, while Nurse and senior Tara Breske had eight points apiece. Breske had a well-rounded stat line, with four rebounds and game-high totals of five assists and five steals.
The Falcons scored on the first two possessions of the game, as Prochaska laid in a teammate's miss, and Breske hit a foul-line jumper. But, the hosts then went scoreless for exactly four-and-a-half minutes, as the Bobcats got two Kamille Buckner layups and a jumper from Danielle Woodmore to take a 6-4 lead.
The home team, after missing seven-straight shots, got another Breske jumper for a 6-6 tie at the 14:14 mark, but both teams went over two minutes without scoring, before Barnett's three-pointer gave the Bobcats the lead once again.
Sophomore Jessica Slagle gave the Falcons a spark off the bench, scoring five-straight BG points. Slagle took a pass from Breske and knocked down a triple, and after OU's Jennifer Bushby answered with a trey, Slagle scored off a feed by junior Jen Uhl. The Brown and Orange trailed, 12-11, with nearly 10 minutes gone.
Back-to-back shots by Barnett, however, increased the Falcons' deficit to five points. Barnett hit a jumper, then was on the receiving end of a nice bounce pass from Gholson, laying the ball in for a 16-11 lead.
Back came BG, however, as Breske's putback was followed by a Prochaska layup. Woodmore scored for the 'Cats, but Pontius connected from long range to tie the score at 18-all with 6:40 left in the half.
But, Bushby hit a long two-pointer that scarcely moved the net, and Jenny Poff's three-pointer gave the Bobcats a five-point lead once again, as Falcon coach Curt Miller used a timeout.
Papenfuss took a pass from Slagle and hit a jumper, only to see Woodmore answer with a layup at the other end. But, Prochaska scored on a nice driving layup, then got open in the left corner and connected on a triple try to tie the game and prompt an Ohio timeout with 3:57 left in the period.
Out of that timeout, however, Breske knocked the ball away from Bushby, and Nurse fed Prochaska for another trey and a 28-25 lead. Prochaska had scored eight-straight points in the span of just 1:02, turning a five-point deficit into a three-point advantage.
Barnett got the Bobcats even once again with a triple of her own, and after Papenfuss split a pair of free throws -- the only charity tosses by either team in the first half -- a Gholson putback gave the visitors a 30-29 lead with 2:06 remaining. But, the Falcons were about to go on a run.
As mentioned, BGSU scored the final 10 points of the half, beginning when senior Sarah Clapper hit a wide-open Papenfuss with an entry pass for a layup and a 31-30 lead with 1:43 on the clock. The Falcons would not trail again.
After an offensive foul on the Bobcats, Prochaska took a pass from Papenfuss and connected on a left-corner three-ball. Prochaska hit a pull-up jumper with 30 seconds left in the half for a six-point BG lead. Then, after Bushby missed a three-point try with five seconds remaining, Papenfuss rebounded and got the ball to Nurse.
With two Bobcat players defending her, Nurse cut to her left and let a shot fly as she crossed the interlocking BG logo at center court. The buzzer sounded while the ball was in the air, and the shot found nothing but net, giving the home team a 39-30 lead at the break.
Prochaska's 17 first-half points included 13 in the final 4:38 before intermission.
In the second half, Bushby hit a triple on the opening possession, then fed Gholson for a layup after a steal. Less than a minute into the half, the 'Cats had cut a nine-point deficit to four. But, the Falcons were about to go on another 10-0 run.
The run began -- surprise! -- with a three-pointer from Prochaska, who took a cross-coury pass from Breske and hit a shot from in front of the Falcon bench. After an offensive foul on Buckner, Nurse took Uhl's pass and hit a triple of her own for a 45-35 lead.
After an Ohio miss, the Falcons grabbed the rebound and turned defense into offense. On the break, Nurse hit Breske for a jumper. Then, another Ohio Miss, a second-straight Prochaska rebound and the Falcons were off and running again. This time, Prochaska took the ball most of the way, then fed an open Uhl for a layup and a 49-35 advantage as the 'Cats took time.
The Bobcats hung around, and got within eight points on Gholson's layup with just under 14 minutes left. Papenfuss got to the line and hit a pair of free throws, as did junior Kelly Zuercher, and the Brown and Orange led by a 55-43 count with 12:26 left.
Several minutes later, Tina Fisher's jumper cut the lead back into single digits, but freshman Chrissy Steffen nailed a three-pointer for a 59-47 BG lead with 8:25 to go.
After a prolonged scoring drought by both teams, a fast-break layup by Pontius put the Falcons up by 14 points with just over five minutes left. Then, after Buckner's putback, layups by Papenfuss and Prochaska gave the Brown and Orange a 16-point lead, the largest of the game, with 3:14 remaining. The Bobcats whittled the lead down to 12 one more time before the Falcons salted the game away at the foul line.
Ohio shot .471 from the field, including an even 50 perfect in the first half, to the Falcons' .441. But, as mentioned, the Falcons held a 35-28 rebounding advantage, and BG forced the Bobcats into 24 turnovers. The Brown and Orange enjoyed a 32-17 advantage in points off turnovers.
Woodmore and Bushby scored eight points apiece for the visitors, with Bushby adding a team-high four assists.
The Falcons now have a week off between games, as BG prepares to take on the University of Akron next Saturday (Feb. 20) at UA's Rhodes Arena. BGSU (10-2 in the MAC) holds a one-game lead over both UA and Kent State (both 9-3) in the East Division race.
