Oxford, Ohio—As the third day of the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships comes to an end, senior captain Meg Richardson has added another record to her swimming resume. Richardson recorded a new BGSU top time in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a seventh place time of 1:49.82; breaking a four-year-old record, previously set by Caroline Keating in 2006.
Richardson's record-breaking race in the 200 free is now the third record-setting race she has participated in since the start of the 2010 MACs just three days ago. Other events include the 50-yard freestyle and the 800-yard freestyle relay.
In addition to Richardson, four additional members of the Orange and Brown swimming squad swam times good enough to be added to BGSU's top ten fastest times list. These swimmers include freshmen Emily Bennet, Emily Waller, Alexa Harris and Alexis Kain and sophomore Katie Womack.
In the 400-yard individual medley, Womack finished ninth out of 37 competitors, posting a time of 4:29.25, swimming her way to the fifth fastest time in program history. In tonight's race, Womack dropped a total of nine seconds off her previous season and personal best time of 4:38.94.
Competing in the consolation finals of the 200-yard freestyle, Emily Bennet nabbed eleventh place out of 51 MAC contenders, touching in at 1:50.78. Bennet falls just behind Richardson in BGSU's top ten times, earning the second fastest spot in program history. Meanwhile, fellow freshman Emily Waller sprinted to the sixth fastest time in team history in the preliminary portion of the day, posting a time of 1:51.76.
Next, Amanda Rom and Alexis Kain looked to better their season best times in the 100-yard breaststroke—each were successful in doing so. Rom touched in for a ninth-place time of 1:04.01—a season best for the sophomore swimmer—while Kain followed right behind her in tenth, finishing in 1:04.13. While Rom currently holds the record in this event (set at the 2009 MACS), Kain has taken the third fastest time at BGSU, trailing onlyy Rom and Josie McCulloch.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Vicky Yu and Sarah Burston each added points to the Falcons scoreboard, taking tenth and 12th, respectively. Yu, a sophomore, nabbed tenth, touching in at 55.81—her fastest time on the season—while Burston, a junior, nabbed 12th with a time of 56.25. Burston currently holds the record in the 100-yard butterfly (54.67); a time she set last year during the preliminary rounds at the MAC Championships.
Although not competing in the finals of the 100-yard backstroke, Alexa Harris swam her way to the fifth fastest time in school history during preliminaries, touching in at 58.37. Harris finished 31st out of 42
competitors.
Meanwhile, the 400-yard Orange and Brown medley relay squad of Bennet, Kain, Yu and Richardson posted a sixth place time of 3:46.92.
