Woodstock, Ga. – The Bowling Green softball team got the 2010 Buzz Classic started on the right foot as junior pitcher Zada Lines threw her first career no-hitter in a 3-0 win over Dartmouth Friday morning. The Buzz Classic is being hosted by Georgia Tech.
“Zada hit her spots well,” Bowling Green Head Coach Shannon Salsburg said about the performance. “She continued to attack hitters throughout the game and kept them on their heels.”
Lines' outing was backed up by a three-run fifth inning that accounted for all of the scoring in the contest. Senior Karmen Coffey scratched out the only run the was needed by walking, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, stealing third and scoring on a fielder's choice. But the Falcons added some insurance as Melissa West drove home a run on a fielder's choice and freshman Adrienne Dick plated another run with a two-out single.
Dartmouth was kept off-balance offensively as Lines retired the first 10 batters in order before a one-out walk in the fourth. But she came right back to get a couple of infield pop-outs to end any threat. Lines had another one-out walk in the fifth but two more fly outs kept the Big Green from pushing anything across. In the seventh, Dartmouth had a two-out walk but Lines forced the next batter to ground out to short to end the contest.
With the win, Bowling Green improves to 4-5 on the season and plays Tennessee-Martin in another contest Friday afternoon. Dartmouth dropped to 0-1 on the year.
