Falcon Softball Squad Sets its Sights on Buzz Classic

Buzz Classic Game Notes
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Head coach Shannon Salsburg and the Falcon softball squad will head to Woodstock, Ga. to compete in the Buzz Classic (March 5-7) for their third and final tournament down south. The Falcons will battle it out against five teams over a three-day stretch, including three teams for the first time in program history. The Falcons are scheduled for two days of back-to-back games and will wrap up the tournament with one match on Sunday morning.
The Falcons will get the tournament started with a mid-morning matchup against the Dartmouth Big Green (March 5) at 11:00 a.m., and an afternoon bout with the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks at 4:00 p.m. On day two (March 6), the Falcons will square off against the North Carolina Greensboro Spartans at 11:00 a.m. followed directly by a contest with the Georgia State Panthers. BGSU will wrap up tournament play against the North Florida Ospreys (March 7) at 9:00 a.m. The 2010 Buzz Classic will be the Falcon's second straight year competing in this tournament.

Hannah Fulk Named MAC Player of the Week
Hannah Fulk, a freshman from Jeromesville, Ohio, was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, as released by the conference office on Tues., Feb. 23, 2010. Fulk played in and started all four of the Falcon's games at shortstop at the Red and Black Classic in Athens, Ga. She contributed to the Falcons 2-2 tournament record, posting five hits for the team, including three doubles and one homerun—the first of her career as a Falcon-- that resulted in a .500 batting average, a .667 on-base percentage and 1.100 slugging percentage. Fulk's first career home run came in the top of the third inning against the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs that resulted in two RBI's. Fulk had one double in BGSU's win over Western Carolina and two doubles against Winthrop, one of which helped the Falcons take a 9-7 lead in the top of the sixth, before falling to the Eagles in the bottom of the inning. At the tournament Fulk was a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen bases and was walked a total of five times.
Falcons vs. Big Green (March 5 • 11:00 a.m.)
BGSU will kick off the 2010 Buzz Classic with a mid-morning match-up against the Dartmouth Big Green for the first time in program history. In 2009, head coach Christene Vogt--entering her seventh season with the Ivy League program--led her squad to a .500 record, recording a 23-23 overall record and a 13-7 conference record. BGSU will be the Big Green's first competition of the 2010 campaign as the Buzz Classic will be the team's first tournament appearance.
Falcons vs. Skyhawks (March 5 • 4:00 p.m.)
Following the Falcons bout with the Big Green, BGSU will take on the University of Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks. UTM has had a strong start to the 2010 season so far posting a 9-1 record. The Skyhawks only loss came to MAC rivals, the Ball State Cardinals (Feb. 27) at the Frost Classic. Last week (Feb. 22), UTM players, Jenny Bain and Paij Lintz swept the weekly Ohio Valley Conference awards, earning both Player and Pitcher of the week. The Falcons and Skyhawks first met on the diamond in 2002 with a 10-2 Falcon win over the OVC squad. Led by head coach Donley Canary, UTM was picked to finish second overall in the OVC.
Falcons vs. Spartans (March 6 • 11:00 a.m.)
In the team's third of five consecutive matches, BGSU will take on the University of North Carolina-Greensboro Spartans for the first time in program history. Led by head coach, Jennifer Herzig, the Spartans have kicked off the 2010 term with a 4-9 record. So far this season, the Spartans have defeated Niagara, Delaware, Sacred Heart and Bethune-Cookman. In a preseason poll, the Spartans were picked to finish sixth in the Southern Conference.
Falcons vs. Panthers (March 6 • 1:00 p.m.)
The Falcons will square off against the Georgia State Panthers for the team's second contest of the day. With an 11-3 start to the 2010 season, the Panthers only losses have come to Kennesaw, Georgia Southern and Eastern Illinois. The Georgia State softball program is led by Bob Heck who is in his 23rd season with the Panthers and has racked up 658 career victories. Originally competing in the Atlantic Sun Conference, Georgia State transferred leagues in 2005-06 and now compete in the Colonial Athletic Association, where they were selected to finish fourth overall.
Falcons vs. Ospreys (March 7 • 9:00 a.m.)
BGSU will conclude Buzz Classic competition with a Sunday bout with the North Florida Ospreys. The Ospreys' have had a slow start to the 2010 season, producing only a 3-11 record so far. In 2009, UNF ended the 2009 season with an 11-9 record and finished sixth out of eleven teams in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Led by head coach Marcie Hickey, the Ospreys are expected to finish seventh in A-Sun competition.
