Woodstock, Ga. – The Bowling Green softball team ended the first day of play at the Buzz Classic, hosted by Georgia Tech, with a 7-3 loss to the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks. Tennesse-Martin, a team receiving votes in top 25 national polls, scored three in the fifth and two more in the sixth to overcome an early deficit and improve to 10-1 on the year.
Freshman Hannah Fulk and sophomore Rachel Proehl each went 2-for-3 for Bowling Green, driving in a run each. That offensive spark at the top of the batting order helped the Falcons to an early lead.
After Tennessee-Martin scored on a solo homer in the top of the first, Bowling Green came right back to tie it in the bottom of the inning. Proehl singled and eventually scored on freshman Paige Berger's RBI double. The Falcons took the lead in the third when Fulk singled, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Proehl doubled to left center to give Bowling Green a 2-1 lead.
Tennessee-Martin rallied in the fifth with four hits that plated three runs to give the Skyhawks a 4-2 lead but the Falcons battled back again in the bottom of the frame. Fulk homered to left center, the second of her career, to cut the deficit in half and get Bowling Green back in the contest. However, UT-Martin scored two in the top of the sixth and added one more in the seventh to come away with the 7-3 victory.
Bowling Green falls to 4-6 on the season following an earlier 3-0 win over Dartmouth in which Zada Lines threw the first no-hitter of her career. The Falcons will be back in action Saturday at the Buzz Classic with games against North Carolina-Greensboro (11 a.m.) and Georgia State (1 p.m.).
