Course
Hawthorns Golf & Country Club - Par-72, 6,037 yards
• Hawthorns Golf & Country Club opened in 1994 and will be hosting the MAC Championship for the first time.
• The par-72, 6,037-yard course was designed by nationally-known architect Arthur Hills. Winding through more than 275 acres of woods and wetlands, the course features scenic, meticulously groomed fairways and bent grass greens.
• Some of the past events the course has hosted include the 2007 NCAA Men's Division III Championship, 2006 PGA of America Callaway Boys Junior Tournament Series, 2005 U.S. Open Senior Qualifier, 2003 Indiana PGA Championship, 2002 Women's Western Golf Association National Girls Championship and 2002 U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier.
Last Week's Results
The Bowling Green State University women's golf team improved by seven shots on Sunday afternoon, carding a 326 at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, Ohio. Combined with its 333 on Saturday, BGSU finished fifth at the Falcon Invitational.
Toledo won the event with a team score of 618, followed by Western Michigan (635), Ohio (651) and Northern Illinois (652) to round out the top five.
Top highlight of the weekend was freshman Susy Grunden, who made one final push to be recognized as the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year. The Krum, Texas, native carded a 76 on Sunday, four shots better than her 80 in the opening 18 holes. Overall, Grunden finished in a tie for fifth (156), her third top-10 finish of the year.
While Grunden made the most noise on day two, the four other Falcons either improved upon or matched their day one score. Lauren Glew carded an 81, after firing and 84 on Saturday. Overall the junior finished in a tie for 17th, here third-best finish of the season.
Amy Ruthenberg carded an 84, one shot better than her 85 on day one. The freshman finished in a tie for 32nd in the 66-player field. Also competing for the Orange and Brown were Marisa Glew (85-85--170, T-36th) and Hannah Lambert (89-86 -- 175, T-48th). Other Falcons, Jen Blanchard (90-91 -- 181, T-55th) and Paula DiFrancesco (94-90 -- 184, T-57th) competed as individuals.
Grunden Closing in on Record
BGSU freshman Susy Grunden will bring a 78.78 scoring average into the MAC Championships this weekend, which is currently the second lowest season scoring average in school history. Jenny Schnipke averaged 78.54 in 2003-04, which is the current lowest scoring average by a Falcon. Grunden will need to card a 230 or better this weekend (76.7 avg.) to surpass Schnipke.
