Mid-American Conference release
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – The 2010 Mid-American Conference Tournament opened on Tuesday night with a conference-wide meal, fireworks and an award ceremony handing out hardware to the MAC's elite. On that list of players honored in the evening were five Bowling Green Falcons, three named to the All-MAC second team and two to the First Team All-MAC.
Derek Spencer earned All-MAC honors for the third consecutive season, having been named to second team honors. Last year Spencer was also named to the All-MAC Second Team after being named to the conference's first team honors his sophomore season. In 2010, Spencer finished his season batting .306 overall and .336 in conference play. Since April 16, he raised his batting average 35 points and hit seven of his 12 home runs on the season, including a walk-off home run that clinched the Falcons' third consecutive MAC East title.
Joining Spencer with second team honors was utility player/designated hitter Matthew Pitzulo and centerfielder #T.J. Blanton#. Pitzulo finished his freshman season hitting .367 overall in 42 games this year. He started 34 games; nine at second base, two at shortstop and the remaining 23 as the Falcons' designated hitter. From the start of the RussMatt Invitation Tournament (Winter Haven, Flor.), his overall batting average dipped below .350 for only two games for the rest of the season. He finished 2010 with three home runs, 23 RBI and tied for the team lead with 12 doubles.
Blanton was a standout in the field and at the bat this season for the Brown and Orange. He finished leading the Falcons in home runs (14), total bases (132), slugging percentage (.673) and runs scored (58). His .378 batting average was second-best on the team and ranked ninth in the MAC. He highlighted his year with a three-home run, seven RBI performance in game one of a double header against Eastern Kentucky on March 20, then belted his fourth home run of the day against the Colonels in game two that same day.
Two Falcons were elected to the All-MAC first team this year. After missing 2009 due to an injury, senior Kevin Leady turned 2010 into a career year on the mound finishing the season with an 8-2 record and a 4.84 earned run average. Against Eastern Michigan on April 4, he struck out a career-high ten batters in 7.1 innings of work in a Falcon win. The next week, Leady pitched seven strong inning and allowed only two runs while striking out seven against Ball State in their lone win that weekend which also signaled the turnaround of BGSU baseball. Leady won four straight starts from April 4 to April 25 during that run and allowed a total of 11 runs in nearly 30 innings of work.
Lastly Jon Berti was named to the All-MAC first team after his first full year as a starter at the shortstop position. His .425 batting average is the highest in the conference and ranks 23rd among all NCAA baseball players. His on-base percentage (.484) is 79th in the country while his stolen bases per game mark (0.55) is good for 38th. He has a team-high 27 steals on 33 attempts. At one point during the Buffalo series last week, Berti had a base hit in six consecutive at-bats, all singles.
