Sophomore Jon Berti has been named to the ACBA/Rawlings All-Mideast First Team.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green shortstop, Jon Berti, was named to the 2010 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/ Rawlings All-Mideast Region First Team yesterday by the NCAA Mideast Region All-American Committee. He becomes the 17th player and the second shortstop in school history to be named to the All-Mideast First Team.
Berti set a number of personal marks and rewrote portions of the BGSU record book after one of the best seasons by a Falcon middle-infielder in program history. In only his second season with the Brown and Orange, he set single-season records in hits (93), batting average (.423) and has a share for most triples in a season (6) with teammate Logan Meisler and former Falcon Larry Arndt, a record he first set in 1982. His 220 at-bats and 29 stolen bases now rank second in single-season all-time records. He also led the team in on-base percentage with a .482 mark.
Berti was recently awarded All-MAC Academic honors after finishing the spring semester with a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.529 in the field of business administration. The sophomore was also named to the All-MAC First Team prior to the conference tournament and was named the MAC East Player of the Week on April 26.
For the second straight year, Bowling Green has placed a shortstop on the ABCA/Rawlings All-Mideast team after former Falcon Ryan Shay was named to the team last season. He is the eighth player to be named to the team since 2000 and the ninth time a Falcon has been placed on the list overall. Twenty-seven Falcons have had the honor of being named to either the first, second or third team since 1970 and at least one Falcon has been named to the list in eight of the last ten seasons. Last season, Brennan Smith and Shay were named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Mideast Second Team.
