BGSU Announces Women's Basketball Non-Conference Schedule
August 16, 2010 | Women's Basketball
Vanderbilt clash highlights seven non-league home games in Falcons’ final season at Anderson Arena
A total of seven home games – the most in nearly three decades -- along with trips to five states highlight the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team's 2010-11 non-conference schedule. Head coach Curt Miller announced the non-league portion of the schedule on Monday (Aug. 16).
“I'm very excited about playing seven non-conference home games in the final season at Anderson Arena,” said Curt Miller. “We feel we have put together a very challenging schedule to prepare us for the grueling Mid-American Conference schedule.
“This schedule is littered with mid-major teams who have had great success, and I am excited about the flavor of our schedule, with many teams either favored to win their conferences, or in position to make a run toward their conference title.”
The non-conference slate includes six games against teams that advanced to national postseason play last March, including three schools that participated in the NCAA Championships. The Falcons could play as many as eight teams that won at least 17 games a year ago, and BG will play five games vs. opponents that won 21 or more contests in 2009-10.
The 2010-11 season, as mentioned, marks the final one in Anderson Arena for the Falcons, as BGSU is 'Closing the Doors of The House That Roars' before moving into the Stroh Center for the 2011-12 campaign.
The Falcons, winners of six consecutive MAC regular-season crowns, will play no fewer than 15 regular-season games at Anderson in the venerable venue's final season (including eight MAC games). BGSU has not played as many as 15 regular-season home contests since the 1981-82 season, and the Falcons have never played seven home games prior to beginning conference action.
BGSU will play a total of 13 non-conference contests. The home slate is highlighted by a game vs. perennial national power Vanderbilt on Wednesday, Dec. 1. The Falcons have twice defeated the nationally-ranked Commodores, including a second-round win in the 2007 NCAA Championships and a regular-season victory in Nashville last season.
“We have a very heavy November schedule,” said Miller. “We have a veteran team, with six seniors, and they will have to be ready to go right out of the gate.
“Then, we begin December with a nationally-respected program, Vanderbilt, coming to Anderson to play us. They have one of the premier coaches in the country in Melanie Balcomb, and we have had some great battles with them over the last few years. It is a great game on our schedule.”
The non-conference schedule begins and ends with trips to the state of Indiana. Miller and Company will open the season with a Nov. 12 game at Evansville. Then, the Falcons return home for no fewer than four games before the Thanksgiving holiday.
That four-game homestand begins with a contest vs. Creighton on Nov. 15. The Falcons and Bluejays have met on one prior occasion, facing off in a 1994 NCAA Tournament contest at Anderson. Last year, CU won 21 games and advanced to the second round of the WNIT.
Games against familiar foes follow, as BGSU plays three teams from the Midwest in a week's time. Youngstown State (Nov. 17), Oakland (Nov. 20) and Detroit (Nov. 24) all will enter Anderson looking to avenge 2009-10 losses to the Brown and Orange. Both OU and UDM won 17 contests a year ago.
Shortly after that Detroit game, the Falcons will board a plane bound for Seattle, Wash., for the team's first trip to the Emerald City since the 2005 NCAA Championships – the first national tourney game in the Miller Era at BGSU. This season, the Falcons will take part in a tournament hosted by Seattle University on Nov. 26-27. BG will face UA-Little Rock on the first day, and will meet either Montana State or the host Redhawks. UALR, like BGSU, finished with a 27-7 record a year ago, and the Trojans advanced to the NCAA's second round, while Montana State won 18 games last season.
“That Arkansas-Little Rock game is a great matchup,” said Miller. “UALR has gotten some early accolades from various web sites, and they are being recognized as one of the top mid-major teams in the country. They return almost their entire starting lineup, including a Wade Trophy watch-list player in Chastity Reed.”
December begins with a two-game homestand, as the Falcons' Vanderbilt game is followed by a matchup with Cal State Fullerton (Dec. 4). The following week, the Brown and Orange will head to 'the other' Bowling Green – Bowling Green, Ky. – for a game vs. Western Kentucky on Dec. 9. That trip also includes a Dec. 11 game at Austin Peay, before BGSU takes a break for fall semester exams.
Vanderbilt and WKU each won over 20 games last year, while Austin Peay captured the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament title for the second-straight season and advanced to the NCAA Championships.
Following the break for exams, the Brown and Orange will host Canisius on Tuesday, Dec. 21. The non-conference schedule concludes with a trip to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, for a Dec. 29 meeting with Butler. The Bulldogs went 23-10 last season and advanced to the WNIT.
“We have a very tough combined road trip to Western Kentucky and Austin Peay,” said Miller. “Western Kentucky is a perennial NCAA Tournament team, and Austin Peay is coming off another trip to the NCAAs. Then, we end the non-conference schedule with Butler, another team poised to battle for their conference title.
“Our schedule is filled with some of the best mid-major programs in the country. I am pleased to be able to play a lot of games against teams that will have a great chance of winning their respective conferences.”
The Falcons are coming off a 27-7 season, in which Miller and company went 14-2 in the MAC en route to a sixth-straight conference regular-season crown. BGSU also won the MAC Tournament, for the fourth time in six seasons, and advanced to national postseason play for the sixth consecutive March. Miller and his staff – associate head coach Jennifer Roos, assistants Brandi Poole and Kevin Eckert and director of operations Monique Rosati – return 10 letterwinners from that team.
Prior to beginning the 2010-11 regular season, the Falcons will host Findlay in an exhibition match on Nov. 3. The MAC schedule will be announced sometime in the next few weeks.
