BGSU concludes season-opening three-match homestand this weekend
The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, after suffering a double-overtime loss to begin the 2010 season, concludes a three-match homestand with a pair of contests this weekend ... the Falcons of head coach Andy Richards will face a second-straight Big East Conference opponent when West Virginia University comes to Cochrane Field on Friday (Aug. 27) ... kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ... then, the Brown and Orange will host a Cincinnati school for the second Sunday in a row ... this Sunday (Aug. 29), the opponent will be Xavier University, with that match kicking off at 1:00 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
The Falcons opened the regular season with a 2-1, double-overtime loss to Cincinnati on Sunday (Aug. 22) ... UC took the lead on an own goal with just under 13 minutes gone, but junior Alyssa Zuccaro scored with five minutes left in regulation to send the match to extra time ... the Bearcats, however, notched the winning goal early in the second OT, with Logan Ballinger scoring after a UC free kick was deflected to her at the top of the penalty area ... fifth-year senior Alexa Arsenault played the first half in goal, making two saves, while redshirt sophomore Becca Ison played the final 57:18 ... Ison made one save and broke up numerous UC crosses and scoring chances ... a total of eight Falcons made their respective collegiate debuts in the match.
GETTING THEIR FEET WET
As mentioned, no fewer than eight Falcons saw the first action of their collegiate careers in Sunday's Cincinnati match ... that list included redshirt freshman Jenny Fowler, who missed all of last season with an injury, as well as true frosh Kylie Briem, Morgan Burgner, Alyssa Carmack, Kailey Paszko, Tracy Togba, Kaitlyn Tobin and Madeline Wideman ... Fowler, Tobin and Wideman were in the starting lineup.
A MIX OF EXPERIENCE ...
Head coach Andy Richards' starting lineup for the Cincinnati match included all four of the team's seniors ... Alicia Almond, Alexa Arsenault, Katie Stephenson and Jackie Tamerlano have combined to make a total of 166 starts at BGSU.
... AND YOUTH
In that UC contest, four Falcons were in the starting lineup for the first time in their collegiate careers ... junior Courtney Beinlich, redshirt freshman Jenny Fowler, Kaitlyn Tobin and Madeline Wideman all were pencilled (penned, actually) into the starting 11 for the first time by head coach Andy Richards ... three of the four players on the back line were making their first-ever start.
FINDING THE SCORESHEET
Junior Alyssa Zuccaro's goal against Cincinnati was the eighth of her career ... she is the Falcons' active career leader in that department ... Zuccaro now has 20 career points, ranking her second behind classmate Megan Amann (21 points) on that BGSU active career list.

Sophomore Sarah VonderBrink and freshman Madeline Wideman each drew assists on Alyssa Zuccaro's goal ... it marked the first career assist for both players ... for Wideman, obviously, the assist came in her first collegiate match.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
BGSU is 0-1-0 on the young season ... head coach Andy Richards, in his 11th season at the helm, welcomed back a total of 17 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's club ... BGSU's returning players combined for over 81 percent of the team's goals and 76% of the assists a year ago ... eight of the top-nine scorers return ... junior Megan Amann paced the Falcons with nine points last fall, including two goals and a team-high five assists ... juniors Katelyn Turner and Alyssa Zuccaro scored eight and seven points, respectively, during their sophomore campaigns ... Turner tied for the team lead with three goals ... sophomore Keely Chandler also had three goals in her initial season at BGSU ... additionally, all three goalkeepers return from last season's roster ... fifth-year senior Alexa Arsenault started 17 of the Falcons' 20 matches between the posts last fall, while soph Laura Arnold made three starts ... through one match this year, Zuccaro leads the team with two points, as she scored BG's lone goal in the season opener ... sophomore Sarah VonderBrink and freshman Madeline Wideman each picked up an assist on the goal ... Arsenault and redshirt soph Becca Ison both saw time in goal in the opener.
FALCONS PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH IN EAST
The Falcons have been picked to finish fifth in the MAC's East Division standings in 2010, according to the preseason coaches poll, released Aug. 16 ... the 2010 season marks the first year that a divisional format has been utilized for MAC women's soccer.

• 48-67-13 in road contests in program history;

• 0-19-3 since the start of 2008 in matches in which the opponent scored first.
FALCON COACH ANDY RICHARDS
BGSU head coach Andy Richards, in his 11th season at the helm, has proven himself to be one of the most successful mentors in MAC women's soccer history ... he has guided the Falcons to an overall record of 98-97-22, and a record of 53-49-12 in MAC regular-season play ... in his first 10 years in BG, Richards led the Falcons to the MAC Tournament on eight occasions, leading the team to the semifinals seven times ... BGSU is 10-5-5 in MAC Tournament matches during his tenure, and no coach has more trips to the league tourney title game than Richards' five ... two of those appearances – in 2004 and 2005 – resulted in MAC Tournament titles and trips to the NCAA Championships ... Richards and the Falcons also won the '05 regular-season crown ... a native of Warwick, England, Richards earned his Bachelor of Education degree from Sheffield City Polytechnic in 1989 ... he received his Master of Education degree from Oregon State in 1997.
WORKING OVERTIME
After Sunday's (Aug. 22) Cincinnati match, the Falcons now have an all-time record of 18-15-26 in overtime matches ... BGSU is now 9-12-11 all-time in OT games played at Cochrane Field ... here are many more Falcon overtime facts than you ever cared to know ...
• Believe it or not, the Falcons have a record of 7-1-13 in OT matches on the road ... BGSU is 2-2-2 all-time in neutral-site OT affairs.
• The UC match snapped BGSU's unbeaten streak in OT matches at 13 ... the Falcons went 4-0-9 in that stretch ... prior to the UC contest, the team's last overtime loss was at Ball State on Oct. 19, 2007 ... that BSU match is still the only OT loss in a road game in program history.
• BG's latest OT unbeaten streak had lasted for nearly three years ... the Falcons once went nearly four years without an overtime loss, going 5-0-5 in that time ... after an OT setback vs. Ohio State on Halloween of 2003, the Falcons did not allow a 'Golden Goal' until Sept. 14, 2007, vs. Wright State.
• Beginning with that WSU game, the Falcons were winless in four consecutive OT matches (0-3-1), before a win at Miami (Oct. 21, 2007) began the just-ended 13-match unbeaten streak.
THE MOUNTAINEERS / THE BGSU-WVU SERIES
West Virginia, like BGSU, brings a record of 0-1-0 into Friday's match ... and, the Mountaineers, like the Falcons, suffered a 2-1 home loss in overtime to begin the season ... WVU fell to No. 11 Penn State on Friday (Aug. 20) ... Bri Rodriguez scored the team's lone goal, while Kerri Butler had nine saves in net ... the Mountaineers were ranked 24th in the nation in the NSCAA preseason coaches poll ... WVU has made 10 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament ... head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown is in her 15th year at WVU ... she welcomed back 13 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's club that went 10-7-6 overall, 5-3-3 in Big East Conference play and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships ... the school's athletics web site is MSNsportsNET.com.
The Falcons trail West Virginia, 3-0-0, in the all-time series between the teams ... the teams met in each of the first two seasons of the BGSU program, with the Mountaineers posting shutout wins in both 1997 and 1998 ... the '98 win was a 6-0 WVU victory in the lone previous match at Cochrane Field (Sept. 9, 1998) ... three years ago (Aug. 31, 2007), in the only BGSU-WVU match during the Andy Richards Era, the Mountaineers downed the Falcons in Morgantown by a 4-0 score ... that match marked the collegiate debut for current BG seniors Alicia Almond, Katie Stephenson and Jackie Tamerlano.
THE MUSKETEERS / THE BGSU-XU SERIES
Xavier is 0-2-0 on the year ... the Musketeers suffered a pair of one-goal losses on the road, against Ball State (1-2; Aug. 20) and Eastern Kentucky (0-1; Aug. 22) ... XU will host Butler on Wednesday night (Aug. 25) before coming to BGSU on Sunday ... Lauren Heap scored the team's lone goal, while Jennifer Perri has played all 180 minutes in net ... last year, the Musketeers had an overall record of 3-15-1 and an Atlantic 10 mark of 2-8-1 ... Woody Sherwood is in his first season as the head coach at his alma mater ... he has a record of 63-66-10 in his eighth year as a collegiate head coach ... 21 letterwinners, including seven starters, return from a season ago ... the school's athletics web site is www.GOXAVIER.com.
The Falcons lead Xavier, 2-0-0, in that series, having posted a pair of shutout wins ... the Brown and Orange recorded a 1-0, double-OT victory in the lone prior meeting at Cochrane (Sept. 1, 2006) ... two years later (and two years ago), BG picked up a 2-0 win in Cincinnati (Sept. 21, 2008) ... Katie Stephenson scored BGSU's second goal in that match, while Alexa Arsenault made five saves to earn the shutout win.
THE 89TH MINUTE (A FEW MORE FALCON NOTES)
Redshirt sophomore Becca Ison played a total of 57:18 in the Cincinnati match, the longest stint of her career ... after redshirting the 2008 season, Ison played in a total of four matches last fall, seeing 45 minutes of work in three contests and just under 24 minutes in the other • over the last two seasons, the Falcons are 12-0-3 in games in which Megan Amann scores a point ... BGSU was 7-0-1 in such matches in 2008, and 5-0-2 last season • as mentioned earlier, no fewer than eight players made their respective collegiate debuts in the Cincinnati match ... six of those eight had seen double-digit minutes of playing time in the team's lone scrimmage, vs. Windsor ... the other two, Kylie Briem and Alyssa Carmack, were making their true debuts ... in fact, Carmack played a total of 66 minutes, the most of any BGSU sub and the second-highest total of any freshman, in the UC match (Madeline Wideman played 71 minutes).
