Falcons are North Carolina-Bound to Open 2010 Season

The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team begins the 2010 regular season with a trip to North Carolina this weekend ... the Falcons of head coach Eric Nichols will play a pair of matches in the Davidson adidas Classic, facing Appalachian State University on Friday (Sept. 3) and meeting host Davidson College on Sunday (Sept. 5) ... Friday's match will begin at 5:00 p.m., while Sunday's contest is set for a 1:00 p.m. start ... all games in the Davidson adidas Classic will be played at Alumni Stadium ... following this weekend's action, the Falcons will return to Ohio to open the home portion of the regular-season schedule on Saturday, Sept. 11 ... on that date, BGSU will face the top-ranked University of Akron at Cochrane Field.

ABOUT THE FALCONS
Head coach Eric Nichols begins his second season at the BGSU helm ... Nichols and assistant coach Paul Habrecht welcome back a total of 14 letterwinners, including seven starters, from last year's club ... the 2009 Falcons went 3-12-3 overall and posted a Mid-American Conference mark of 2-3-1, placing fifth in the league standings ... BG scored a total of 21 goals last season, and the departed players combined to score 17 of them ... the Falcons' top-two scorers last season were the graduated Cameron Hepple (10 goals, 21 points) and Jacob Lawrence (five goals, 13 points) ... the Falcons have 12 newcomers on the 2010 team ... junior Byard Ebling is the top returning scorer, having recorded two goals and five points last season ... the only other players on the 2010 roster who scored in '09 are redshirt juniors Chris Jurtovski and Max Weston, who had one goal apiece ... in goal, the lone returning 'keeper is sophomore Dylan Schoettley ... he played in 10 matches a year ago, starting the final seven ... Schoettley had 44 saves and a goals-against average of 2.27 ... redshirt junior goalkeeper Miguel Rosales is in his first season at BGSU after transferring from the Univ. of Cincinnati.
LAST TIME(S) OUT
The Falcons played three scrimmages, going 2-1-0 while outscoring the opposition by a 5-2 count ... BG scored three first-half goals in the first exhibition, a 3-0 win over Windsor (Aug. 20) ... seniors Dusko Topolic and Garrett Bireline found the net in that match, as did redshirt junior Chris Jurtovski ... two days later, Topolic found the back of the net once again, but host Oakland got a goal in the 119th minute and downed the Falcons, 2-1 ... in the final scrimmage, freshman Ryan Comiskey's 'golden goal' gave BG a win over visiting Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon (Aug. 28) ... redshirt junior Miguel Rosales played 226 of the 301 minutes in goal in the three matches.
MIGHT WANNA GRAB A PROGRAM ON THE WAY TO YOUR SEAT
Official statistics were not kept for the Windsor match, but the Falcons' starting lineup at Oakland included three newcomers, with a total of seven freshmen seeing time off the bench ... in the Indianapolis match, the starting 11 featured six newcomers, including four freshmen, while two other frosh played off the bench.
FALCONS PICKED TO FINISH SIXTH
The Falcons have been picked to finish sixth in the MAC standings in 2010, according to the preseason coaches poll, released by the conference office on Thursday afternoon (Aug. 26) ... the poll is the result of voting by the league's seven head coaches ... Akron, ranked No. 1 in the nation in numerous preseason polls, was picked to capture the 2010 MAC title ... last year, the Zips captured both the regular-season and tourney titles ... Northern Illinois was predicted to finish second, while Hartwick and Western Michigan were picked to tie for third place ... Hartwick and Florida Atlantic are affiliate members of the MAC in men's soccer.

BGSU-DAVIDSON TIES
• BGSU head coach Eric Nichols certainly is familiar with Davidson College ... Nichols spent the 2008 season as an assistant coach for the Wildcats under current DC head coach Matt Spear, prior to coming to BG in February of 2009.
• BGSU women's basketball associate head coach Jennifer Roos is a 1993 Davidson graduate ... Roos played field hockey and basketball at DC ... additionally, she was an assistant coach for the Wildcat women's basketball team for eight years, prior to coming to BGSU in 2001 ... Roos is a member of the Davidson Athletics Hall of Fame.
THE MOUNTAINEERS / THE BGSU-ASU SERIES
Appalachian State, like BGSU, opens the regular season with Friday evening's match in Davidson ... the Mountaineers picked up a win and a tie during the exhibition portion of the season ... ASU battled to a 2-2 draw with Radford and posted a 1-0 win over UNC Asheville, with both scrimmages being held on the road ... the Mountaineers were picked to finish seventh in the Southern Conference this season, according to the SoCon preseason coaches poll ... head coach Shaun Pendleton, a graduate of Akron, returns 20 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's club ... the 2009 version of the Mountaineers went 8-8-1 overall and 3-4-0 in conference play ... Pendleton enters his third year at ASU, and his 22nd season as a collegiate head coach ... the school's athletics web site is www.GoASU.com.

THE WILDCATS / THE BGSU-DC SERIES
Davidson hosts Marist in Friday (Sept. 3) action at the Davidson adidas Classic, before meeting BGSU two days later ... the Wildcats had a pair of wins in scrimmage play, including a 1-0 victory over North Carolina State and a 3-1 triumph vs. Pfeiffer College ... DC is coming off a 2009 season which saw the 'Cats go 11-7-0 overall and 3-4-0 in SoCon play ... head coach Matt Spear welcomes back 15 letterwinners, including 10 starters, from that club ... the 2010 team has been picked to finish fifth in the SoCon in the preseason coaches poll, and co-captains Alex Caskey and Greg Macnamara were chosen to the preseason all-league team ... Spear enters his 10th season as a collegiate head coach, all at Davidson ... the school's athletics web site is www.davidsonwildcats.com.
The Falcons lead Davidson, 1-0-0, in the all-time series between the teams ... the only prior match was an NCAA Championships play-in contest at Cochrane Field ... on Nov. 12, 1995, the Brown and Orange picked up a 3-1 win to move on to the NCAA Tournament ... Joe Burch scored two second-half goals to break a 1-1 tie in that match, which was played in sub-freezing temperatures (upper 20s) in Northwest Ohio.
