As the old sports adage goes, “Records are made to be broken.” Perhaps the more appropriate adage for the Bowling Green State University women's golf team would be, “Record books are made to be rewritten in two days.”
After all, that's exactly what the Falcons did on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 13 and 14) at the Worldlink North Texas Fall Classic in Denton, Texas.
Playing in their first tournament of the 2010-11 season, the Orange and Brown invaded the home turf of sophomore sensation Susy Grunden to compete on the par-72, 6,489 yard Golf Course at Champions Circle.
Three rounds and 54 holes later, the Falcons obliterated the BGSU women's team record for total score after 54 holes. The old record was 937, set in the 2007 Rio Verde Invitational. The new record stands at 924 – an improvement of 13 strokes.
The Falcons completed rounds of 316, 305 and 303. For comparison's sake, last year's best 54-hole score was 980 – a difference of 56 strokes – and the team had one round all season better than 317.
Overall, Bowling Green finished sixth, 11 strokes behind fifth-place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and 12 strokes ahead of seventh place Oklahoma City University.
The host North Texas Mean Green won the tournament, setting school records of their own on their way to a final total of 872 (297-291-284).
Individually, Susy Grunden won medalist honors, completing (without a doubt) the best tournament in school history.
Grunden posted a final total of 210 (69-71-70). Her three rounds this week in Denton represent three of the top six rounds in BGSU history.
She now owns the BGSU women's record for 18 holes (69), 36 holes (140) and 54 holes (210), surpassing Falcon alum Jenny Schnipke for each honor. Grunden's 54-hole score breaks Schnipke's record by 11 strokes.
In fact, her tournament score is one of the best in Falcon history, regardless of gender; the men's record for 54-holes is only two strokes better (208).
Grunden's victory is the second of her Falcon career. She is now tied for second in career wins with Jessica McCann (2005-08). The Bowling Green record for career wins is three, set by Jennifer Girdlestone from 1990-93. Girdlestone also owns the single-season wins record with two victories in 1993.
Fellow sophomore Amy Ruthenberg also completed a very solid tournament. She registered the three best rounds of her brief Falcon career to finish in a 30th place tie at 234 (79-76-79).
Freshman Bailey Arnold also joined in the festivities; her third-round 74 represents one of the Falcons' ten best rounds over the last two seasons. After tallying an 83 and a 77 yesterday for a total of 234, Arnold joined Ruthenberg in the tie for 30th place.
Kelsey Benson, who joins Arnold in Bowling Green's freshman class, improved her score in each of the three rounds of the tournament. Benson carded an opening-round 85, then shot an 81 and an 80 over the final 36 holes.
Junior Paula DiFrancesco also had a positive tournament, scoring better than her career average in both the second and third rounds. Her tournament score of 251 included rounds of 81 and 83.
Bowling Green will now turn its attention to a return trip to Waynesville, N.C. for the Great Smokies Intercollegiate. The Falcons will return from Texas on Wednesday, but there will be no rest for the weary, as the team will travel on Thursday for the 36-hole tournament that will be held on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 18 and 19).
The lineup for North Carolina will be the same as in Texas, with one exception: senior Lauren Glew will take the spot of freshman Kelsey Benson for this weekend's tournament.
