Bowling Green State University tennis freshman Nikki Chiricosta won a singles flight title Sunday (Sept. 26), as the Falcons completed play at the Spartan Invitational. The three-day, 13-team invite, hosted by Michigan State University, was held at multiple venues in the East Lansing, Mich., area.

No team scores were kept at the invite, but individual singles and doubles flight champions were crowned.

Chiricosta defeated Louisville's Amelia Harris in the championship match of singles draw C, winning a three-set match. The Falcon freshman won the opening set, saw Harris even the match, and then captured the third set. All three sets were decided by the same 6-3 score.

Chiricosta defeated opponents from Chicago State, Cleveland State, Marquette and Louisville en route to her title. She now has a 6-1 singles record this year to date.

Other Sunday highlights for the Falcons included sophomore Mary Hill sweeping Louisville's Kaysara Mandry at the B draw, while senior Christine Chiricosta picked up a win over UofL's Mandy Brown in the A draw.

Sophomore Katie Grubb lost just one game in her sweep of Detroit's Melanie Capuano at the E draw. Grubb finished the weekend with a 3-1 singles mark, as did Christine Chiricosta.

In doubles action, Grubb teamed with freshman Emily Reuland for a Sunday win over a team from host Michigan State in the B draw. Grubb and Reuland won their last three matches of the weekend to win the back draw at that flight.

Christine Chiricosta combined with sophomore Maddy Eccleston for a decisive win over a Detroit tandem on Sunday. That BG duo, like the Grubb/Reuland team, went 3-1 on the weekend.

BGSU competitors went 4-3 in singles and 2-2 in doubles play on Sunday. On the weekend, the Falcons combined to post records of 17-11 in singles action and 10-5 in doubles.

The Falcons are idle from competition next weekend, returning to action with the Rocket Invitational in Toledo on Oct. 8-9.
