Susy Grunden Captures Third Place
FINAL RESULTS
The Bowling Green State University women's golf team recovered from a slow start on Monday (Sept. 27) at the 2010 Ball State Cardinal Classic to finish tied for sixth place in the field of 14 teams.
At the par-72, 6,258-yard course in Muncie, Ind., the Falcons improved by five strokes in the second round to complete the tournament's 36 holes with a total of 617 (311-306).
The team finished in a tie with Ohio University, who shot 297 on the first day but fell on hard times in the second round, posting a 320.
Fellow Mid-American Conference team Northern Illinois finished three shots behind Bowling Green and tied for eighth with Youngstown State. Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis (IUPUI) and California (Pa.) ended their tournament two shots further back.
BGSU and Ohio each stood three shots behind Ashland and Eastern Kentucky, who tied for fourth place.
Western Michigan won the tournament with rounds of 297 and 299 for a total of 596.
Individually, sophomore Susy Grunden earned another top-five finish. Her final-round score of 71 vaulted her into sole possession of third place, as she carded 145 for the tournament. Grunden trailed the tournament champion by only three strokes.
In 14 career tournaments, Grunden has earned four finishes in the top five of a leaderboard. She has two other top-ten finishes to her credit.
Senior Lauren Glew participated in her second tournament of the season. This time, she competed as an individual, rather than as part of the five-member team. Regardless, Glew posted the highest score for any of the individual competitors and had the Falcons' second-best score of the tournament. Glew's back-to-back rounds of 78 gave her a final score of 156.
Bailey Arnold and Amy Ruthenberg each played to within one stroke of Glew. Arnold completed rounds of 78 and 79, while Ruthenberg played rounds of 79 and 78, each on their way to a total of 157.
Marisa Glew, sister to Lauren and also a senior, improved by five strokes in the second round during her first action of the fall schedule. Her final round of 78 gave her a 36-hole score of 161.
Junior Paula DiFrancesco rounded out the action for the Orange and Brown; she posted a first-round score of 80 and totaled 164 for the tournament.
Bowling Green now takes two weeks off before resuming their fall slate. On October 11th and 12th, the team will travel to Fairlawn, Ohio for the Zippy Invitational, where Susy Grunden will defend her individual title from 2009. After that, the team will play at the Duramed MAC Preview tournament in Nashport, Ohio on the 18th and 19th of the month.
