Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team fought back from an early 10-point deficit and the Falcons rolled to a 62-53 win over Miami (Ohio) Sunday afternoon on Throwback Night.
Bowling Green's bench sparked the Falcons in front of 2,367 raucous fans as the team held Miami to one bucket over the final 12:24 of the first half and never looked back. The 2,367 fans were the most in Anderson Arena since 2,835 showed up to watch the Falcons play Wright State on Feb. 18, 2006.
The Falcons' bench outscored Miami's 33-4 and turned around a poor start with a strong defensive effort in the first half. The RedHawks led 17-8 on a Nick Winbush three-pointer with 12:24 left in the first half but the BGSU defense clamped down.
The only points Miami would score the rest of the way in the opening 20 minutes came on an Orlando Williams three-ball with 7:14 to go. Jordon Crawford sparked the team with back-to-back baskets and Luke Kraus made three free-throws after being fouled shooting a trifecta to tie the score at 17-17.
After Williams' three made it 20-17 Miami, Danny McElroy completed a three-point play and A'uston Calhoun provided a jumper that gave the Falcons their first lead of the game at 22-20. Torian Oglesby followed with a thunderous alley-oop dunk and Kraus knocked down a three-pointer with 1:33 left that made the score 27-20 at the break.
Miami got to within three by starting the second half with a 6-2 run but Calhoun hit a three-pointer and the Falcons began to extend the lead. A Scott Thomas jumper with 13:54 to play made it 36-30 and Crawford scored on a lay-up to make it 38-30. Joe Jakubowski hit a tear-drop from the baseline to push the lead to 10 and it eventually got to 12 on a McElroy jumper with 10:08 to play.
The RedHawks quickly came back on two Julian Mavunga jumpers and a Winbush three-pointer that made it 46-41 but it never got closer and the Falcons made 4-of-5 free-throws in the final 67 seconds to ice the contest.
Calhoun led four Falcons in double-figures with 11 points, while Thomas, Crawford and Kraus had 10 each. Crawford was the sparkplug, adding eight assists and five steals. Thomas had seven rebounds and three steals as well.
Bowling Green shot 46 percent from the floor but made just 2-of-14 three-pointers. The Falcons were 8-of-9 at the free-throw line though and held Miami to just four free-throw attempts and two makes. The RedHawks also committed 20 turnovers, 11 from steals, and Bowling Green had just nine, posting a 21-10 edge in points off of turnovers.
The loss is Miami's first in MAC play this year, falling to 7-10 overall and 2-1 in conference. The Falcons move into a tie for first in the MAC East with identical 7-10 and 2-1 records. Kent State is also 2-1 in conference play for a three-way tie at the top.
Bowling Green will host Ohio Wednesday at 7 p.m. in another MAC East Division contest. The Bobcats are just a game behind the Falcons at 1-2 in league play.
NOTES
* A'uston Calhoun has led Bowling Green in scoring in each of the team's three MAC games after leading the team in scoring just twice during non-conference play.
* The 62 points scored was the lowest point total for the Falcons in a win this year.
* A'uston Calhoun picked up his second career start Sunday. His other start came in the season opener at Howard.
* Miami led 14-4 six minutes into the game. That 10-point difference represented the largest deficit Bowling Green has overcome in a win this year.
* Jordon Crawford's eight assists tied a career-high he set against Niagara earlier this year. His five steals set a new career-high, besting his previous high of three.
