New Look Falcons for 2011
BGSU will have a much different look to their roster in 2011 after the graduation of three Falcons and the insurgence of five new faces to the Falcon program. Overall the Falcons will feature six freshmen, three sophomores, two juniors and a pair of seniors.
What is Gone?
The 2011 Falcons will have to find a way to replace Morgan Balzer, Queenita Gamble and Breanne Guy, all who graduated at the end of last season. Guy was the most notable of the three advancing to the NCAA Regionals in each of the last three seasons in the all-around.
What Returns?
While all three graduated Falcons did play a large role with the Orange and Brown last season, what returns is a large number of talented gymnasts. Junior Kasey Fillmore advanced to the NCAA Regionals in the all-around in 2010, while sophomore Danielle Wishart competed on the vault at Regionals. Wishart owned the top Falcon score on vault, beam and floor in 2010. Junior Dawn Christman finished in a tie for first at the MAC Championships on the floor, scoring a 9.850, while sophomore Monica Eaton is the top Falcon returner on the uneven bars. Sunny Marchand and Amber Brewer will also play a major role in 2011 for the Orange and Brown.
Falcons Coming off Strong 2010
If 2010 was a building block for this season the Falcons could be looking at a strong new year. BGSU posted a five-match win streak last season, its longest win streak since the 2001-02 Falcons went 17-1 overall and won nine straight to open the year. BGSU posted a 4-2 conference record as well in 2010, its most conference wins since that same 2001-02 team went 6-0 in the MAC.
The House That Roars
The Falcon gymnasts built a new nest in Anderson Arena in 2009 and that continues today. Since moving to Anderson Arena the Falcons are 4-3 inside the “House That Roars”. With volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball moving into the Stroh Center in 2011, Anderson Arena will solely be the home for BGSU gymnastics next season.
Falcons Announce 2011 Captains
BGSU head coach Kerrie Beach has announced that seniors Amber Brewer and Lexi Psichopaidas, along with red-shirt junior Kasey Fillmore and sophomore Danielle Wishart will serve as captains for the 2011 campaign.
Beach Leads BGSU
Head coach Kerrie Beach begins her fourth season at the helm of the BGSU gymnastics program. Last season Beach helped coach the team to a five-match win streak and a 4-2 conference record, both best in nearly a decade. She has an 18-29 overall record and is 9-9 in Mid-American Conference play.
Falcons Picked Sixth In 2011 Preseason Poll
The Mid-American Conference announced the 2001 gymnastics preseason poll on Jan. 4, with the Falcons picked to finish sixth among the seven team field. The poll was voted on the league's head coaches. Kent State was picked to win the league.
1. Kent State
2. Central Michigan
3. Western Michigan
4. Northern Illinois
5. Ball State
6. Bowling Green
