Fourth-year Falcon will remain with team in a managerial role
Bowling Green State University redshirt junior Maribeth Giese's playing career on the Falcon women's basketball team has come to an end. Giese has been medically disqualified due to recurring health issues.
Giese, in her fourth season at BGSU, will remain with the program as a student manager. Her medical condition is non-life threatening, but her health issues are exacerbated by physical exertion such as participating in practices and games.
“I've been blessed to have been able to compete for the past three years for Coach (Curt) Miller and the rest of the staff here at BGSU, and to have been part of such a championship tradition,” said Giese. “Basketball has always been a huge part of my life, and it is certainly difficult to have my athletic career come to an abrupt end.
“The coaches and my teammates have been incredibly supportive, and I look forward to helping the team in every way possible to compete for another championship this year.”
Giese, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio (Mother of Mercy), played in a total of 32 games over the last three seasons. As a freshman in 2008-09, she saw action at a forward spot in 17 contests, averaging 2.5 points per game and making 5-of-12 shots from three-point land on the season. She scored seven points in 14 minutes in her collegiate debut at Temple, and had an eight-point outing in a win over Youngstown State.
In the 2009-10 campaign, Giese saw action in just two contests due to injury. She played a total of five minutes in a pair of November games. Last season, she returned to play in 13 games and shoot 50 percent from the field. Giese averaged 1.1 ppg a year ago, with a season-high six points in a win over Miami and a career-best five rebounds in another victory vs. YSU. In her career, Giese made seven three-point field goals in 15 attempts (46.7%) and went 13-for-16 (81.3%) from the free-throw line.
“Despite my disappointment that Maribeth will not be able to finish her career on the court with her teammates, my number-one concern is for her health and well-being,” said BGSU head coach Curt Miller. “Maribeth is one of the most brilliant student-athletes that I have been around in 22 years of coaching, and she has a tremendous future ahead of her.
“Maribeth has played a big part in us earning MAC championships and national postseason berths in each of the last three seasons, and I look forward to her helping us in a new role in the 2011-12 season. Maribeth has one of the best basketball minds, in terms of X's and O's, on the team, and her teammates value her opinions during practices and games. Maribeth's teammates, as well as the entire coaching staff, recognize that she could really thrive in her new role. She is an important part of our women's basketball family.”
A political science major, Giese has a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade-point average through her first three years at BGSU. She is on track to graduate in December of 2011, and plans to begin graduate school at BGSU in the spring of 2012.
