Amann, Huth score second-half goals to keep BGSU's MAC Tournament hopes alive
On 'Senior Day' at Cochrane Field, it was only appropriate that a fourth-year member of the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team scored the winning goal Sunday afternoon (Oct. 23). Senior Megan Amann found the back of the net early in the second half, while freshman Sidney Huth added some insurance as the Falcons downed Northern Illinois University, 2-0.

With the win, the Falcons are now 6-13-0 overall and 3-7-0 in Mid-American Conference play, and BGSU's MAC Tournament hopes remain alive. The Huskies dropped to 2-14-2 and 1-8-0, respectively.
Sophomore Madeline Wideman had the primary assist on both goals, making a long run upfield in each case. On both plays, Wideman drew the final NIU defender to her and made a pass that led to a wide-open shot. Both Amann and Huth took advantage, slotting the ball inside the far post.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Becca Ison made two saves to earn her third shutout of the season.
The Falcons had a 19-9 advantage in total shot attempts, and BGSU put seven shots on goal to the Huskies' two. NIU 'keeper Amy Carr made five saves in her complete-match effort.
BGSU had six corner kicks on the afternoon, and did not allow Northern a single corner.
BG has one regular-season match remaining, as the Falcons head to Oxford to take on Miami University on Thursday (Oct. 27). To qualify for the MAC Tournament, BGSU needs win against the RedHawks, and have both Akron and Eastern Michigan lose their respective Thursday matches. The Zips take on Ohio, while the Eagles face Central Michigan.
One of the Huskies' most dangerous scoring chances of the day came in the early going. With just under seven minutes gone, NIU senior captain Kelsey Passaglia lofted a cross into the six-yard box from the right side of the pitch. A teammate just couldn't quite get a boot on the ball at the far post, and it sailed out of play for a BG goal kick.
With nearly 10 minutes elapsed, the Falcons had an offensive flurry. Off of a corner kick, junior Sarah VonderBrink chested the ball back to freshman Kaylee Draper. Draper, in the center of the field, hit a shot from just outside the penalty area, but her effort was blocked by a Huskie defender, and the ball trickled toward Amann on the left side of the area. The senior got off a pair of shots, but both were blocked by NIU defenders, and Carr was finally able to grab the ball out of the air.
Nearly a third of the way through the opening half, VonderBrink turned on the jets to beat a Northern player to Amann's forward pass. 'Vondy' won the 50/50 ball and crossed it into the box, but -- with senior captain Alyssa Zuccaro waiting on the doorstep -- an NIU player was able to head the ball out of danger.
Seventeen minutes were on the clock when sophomore Kaitlyn Tobin brought the ball down the center of the field and hit a shot from roughly 18 yards away. The ball went just wide of the right post, but the shot was close enough to the frame that Carr felt compelled to dive and get a glove on it.
Three minutes later, Zuccaro made a run into the box. 'Z' was harassed by a defender for the length of her run, but still was able to get a shot off as she fell to the ground. But, the ball went wide right.
Wideman and Huth each played crosses into the center of the penalty area in the final 10-plus minutes of the period. Wideman's cross, off of a pass from Huth, was blocked away with 10:30 left. Three minutes later, Huth won a ball in the left corner and hit a cross that just missed connections with Zuccaro's head. Wideman tracked the ball down on the right side, eluded a Northern player and sent the ball back into the box, but Carr was able to gather it in.
The first half ended with BGSU owning an 8-2 advantage in shots, but the first 45 minutes could not see either team produce a shot on goal.
That all changed in the second period, as the teams combined for six shots on goal in the first 10 minutes. The Huskies, after generating just two shots in the first half, fired three shot attempts within the first 2:40 of the second. Two of the three shots were off target, but Northern's Kayra Thompson forced Ison to make the first save of the day at the 47:03 mark.
After a shot by Niki Newquist was off the mark, Ison booted the ball down the etner of the field. It was headed by several players and ended up at the feet of Zuccaro. Zuccaro battled Passaglia for the ball as the two senior captains headed toward the 18-yard box. For a moment, it appeared that 'Z' would be able to fend off her defender, but Passaglia stuck with her for the entire run. Zuccaro was able to poke at the ball, but her shot was blocked by a diving Carr.
Another Zuccaro effort went wide, but the Falcons won the ball back after the ensuing goal kick. Wideman picked up the ball on the right side of the pitch, made a move to elude a defender and found herself with a great deal of space. The sophomore worked her way toward the center of the pitch, with several Huskies unable to catch her. Amann, in the center of the field, made a spin move toward the left side of the box.
With Wideman steaming toward her and Amann on her right, the lone NIU defender in the play was forced to make a choice. She made a move toward Wideman, but the sophomore flicked the ball to Amann in the center of the box. Amann, wide open by this point, settled the ball and fired it inside the far (right) post to give BGSU the lead for good. The goal came at the 50:40 mark.
Just over a minute later, Amann got the ball back and hit a hard shot from distance. This time, however, Carr was able to make the save.
Ten minutes into the period, several Falcons teamed up to bring the ball into the NIU end. Sophomore Alyssa Carmack started the buildup, and Amann, Wideman and Zuccaro all were involved as well. Zuccaro played a ball ahead to Wideman who, with her back to the goal and three defenders around her, knocked the ball to her right to Amann. The senior hit a shot as she entered the 18-yard area, but Carr made the save.
BGSU had several more chances as the clock ticked toward the midway point of the second half. Redshirt soph Jenny Fowler hit a turnaround shot from long range, and Zuccaro got her head on a long free kick by junior Emily Rothwell. But, Fowler's shot was stopped and Zuccaro's header went just over the crossbar.
But, with 7:22 left in the period, the Falcons got a second goal. Tobin won the ball at midfield, and poked it straight ahead to Wideman. The sophomore embarked upon another long journey downfield, sailing past several defenders and nearing the penalty area.
With Huth on her right, Wideman took on the last defender and slid the ball to her right at the last possible second. For the second time in the half, Wideman's pass resulted in a wide-open teammate. Huth took one touch and slotted the ball into the lower-left-hand corner of the goal to give the Falcons some breathing room.
The Huskies pressed the attack, and NIU got a shot off in the final minute of play, but it was blocked and BGSU was able to preserve the shutout. The clean sheet was the Falcons' first in MAC play this season.
The Falcons' match at Miami begins at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Should BGSU qualify for the MAC Tournament, the Brown and Orange would play a quarterfinal game on the road on Sunday, Oct. 30.
