BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- On Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 26), the Mid-American Conference named the inaugural Swimmers of the Week for the 2011-12 season. As part of the first set of awards, the league honored Bowling Green State University athlete Alexis Kain as women's Co-Swimmer of the Week.
Kain, a junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, helped the Falcons begin the season 2-0 as the team swept a triangular meet last Saturday in Fremont, Ohio against John Carroll and Oakland University.
Kain swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke races on Saturday, as she continued a dominance in the event that she established last season. In the 100-yard race, Kain finished in 1:05.89 and won by a half-second. Later in the meet, she cruised to a 1.5 second victory in the 200-yard event by completing the distance in 2:24.60.
Kain also helped the Falcons earn a victory in one of the meet's two relay events. She swam second for her 200 medley relay team and finished her leg in 0:29.68. The team won with an overall mark of 1:46.93, which was two seconds better than the runner-up. Kain also swam in the 400 freestyle relay, and her team placed second in that event.
Overall, Kain's efforts led to three of the team's seven event victories during Saturday's meet. The Falcons defeated Oakland, 133-129, and routed John Carroll by a final tally of 218-43.
This is the first Swimmer of the Week award for Kain, and it is the first time the MAC has honored a BGSU swimmer since Dec. 2009.
Kain and her teammates face MAC competition for the first time this season beginning on Friday, as the team competes in meets on back-to-back days. First, on Friday, the Falcons host Ohio University at Cooper Pool. The team then travels to Muncie, Ind. for a dual meet against Ball State on the following day.
