Alex Carder used both his arm and his legs to lift host Western Michigan University to a 45-21 win over the Bowling Green State University football team Saturday afternoon (Oct. 8). The Mid-American Conference game was held at Waldo Stadium.
With the win, the Broncos improve to 4-2 overall, and WMU is now 2-0 in the MAC. BGSU drops to 3-3 and 1-1, respectively.
Carder threw for 212 yards and three touchdowns, and also ran for a career-high 95 yards and another score. He completed 18 passes in 26 attempts on the day.
Jordan White had 12 receptions for 156 yards, and caught two of Carder's three TD tosses.
As a team, the Broncos rolled up 578 yards of total offense, including 351 on the ground. The Falcons' 381 total years included 263 threw the air and 118 on the ground.
After holding the Falcons to a three-and-out on the game's first possession, Carder led the Broncos on a 65-yard scoring drive. The Bronco QB rushed for 52 of those 65 yards, including the final yard into the end zone.
BGSU, however, quickly responded, as Matt Schilz directed the Falcons on a three-play, 77-yard drive. The last of those three plays came after the redshirt sophomore QB faked a handoff to freshman Anthon Samuel, then completed a pass to a wide-open Kamar Jorden for a 57-yard touchdown. After Stephen Stein's extra point was good, the game was tied, 7-7, with just under six minutes gone.
After the teams exchanged punts, the Broncos regained the lead on Tevin Drake's 12-yard run. The hosts held the Falcons again, and WMU was driving again when freshman Darrell Hunter intercepted Carder on the first play of the second quarter.
The Falcons responded with a 73-yard drive, culminating with Samuel's 5-yard run. Stein's PAT knotted the score at 14-all with 9:22 left before halftime.
Back came the Broncos, though. Brian Fields broke free for a 53-yard run to the BGSU 16, and Carder found White for 15 more yards to the one-yard line. On the next play, Carder hit Chris Prom for a score, giving the hosts the lead for good.
The Falcons went 60 yards on the ensuing drive, reaching the WMU 18-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. Western took over with 2:49 left in the half, and drove downfield to take a two-score lead for the first time in the game. Carder completed five of his seven passes on that drive, finding White for a 9-yard score with 30.8 seconds left before halftime. The PAT gave Western a 28-14 lead at the intermission.
On the opening drive of the second half, the hosts drove down to the BGSU 18 before the Falcon defense held. Paul Swan forced Carder to throw the ball away on second down, and Kevin Moore then sacked the Western QB on third down. The Broncos were forced to settle for a John Potter field goal, giving the hosts a 31-14 lead.
The Falcons were forced to punt on the next possession, and Carder and the Broncos salted the game away with a nine-play, 66-yard drive. That drive took nearly five minutes, and saw Carder hit White again, for a 26-yard score. The point-after try gave the Broncos a 38-14 advantage.
WMU would score again, with a 51-yard run by Drake leading to a one-yard TD run by Antoin Scriven early in the fourth quarter. Jamel Martin's four-yard run and Stein's PAT closed the scoring with 2:30 left.
Schilz threw for 194 yards in the game, completing 15 of his 25 passes. He had one touchdown toss and did not throw an interception.
Eugene Cooper led BG with nine receptions, totaling 72 yards, while Jorden had a team-high 103 receiving yards on four catches.
Samuel led the Falcons on the ground, with 59 yards on his 14 carries.
WMU's rushing total included 112 yards on just 10 carries by Drake. Carder, as mentioned, had 95 yards on the ground, while Fields ran for 79 yards on nine tries.
The Falcons return home to face the University of Toledo next Saturday (Oct. 15). Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Doyt L. Perry Stadium.
