Falcons Complete Sweep Of Canisius With 3-1 Win

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team finished the sweep of Canisius Saturday night, defeating the Golden Griffins 3-1. Senior Cameron Sinclair and freshman Ryan Carpenter each scored a goal for the second straight game, while sophomore Ryan Viselli added a tally that would eventually become the game winner.
Similar to last night, the Falcons dominated the opening frame, outshooting Canisius 13-3. Unlike last night however, Bowling Green recorded a goal in the first period. Freshman Ryan Carpenter tipped home a shot from freshman Rusty Hafner at the point to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Hafner's assist marks the first point of his career, while Carpenter's goal gives him five on the season.
The second period was relatively quiet for both teams until 16:38 of the frame. Canisius junior Torrey Lindsey sent a shot on net that gave junior goaltender Andrew Hammond trouble. Hammond let up a rebound in front that sophomore Taylor Law knocked home, tying the game at one.
The Falcons responded a little over a minute later on the power play, when Viselli knocked home his third goal of the season, giving the Falcons a 2-1 advantage.
Exactly one minute later, Sinclair knocked home his second goal of the season at even strength, giving the Falcons the 3-1 lead.
The Falcons shut down Canisius in the final frame to secure the 3-1 win, marking their first weekend series sweep since week two at Alabama-Huntsville.
Viselli's goal in the second period marked the third straight game in which the Falcons have scored on the power play, marking their longest streak of the season.
The non-conference win improves the Falcons record to 6-5-1 overall. The loss drops Canisius to 2-5-1 on the year.
The Falcons are back in action next week at Miami, marking coach Chris Bergeron's second return to Oxford since coming to Bowling Green.
