BOXSCORE
OXFORD, Ohio. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost to the Miami RedHawks 4-0 Friday night, thanks to four even-strength goals and a 23-save performance from Miami senior goaltender Cody Reichard. The loss increases Bowling Green's CCHA losing streak to six games.
The Falcons matched Miami's energy to open the contest, limiting the RedHawks chances throughout the first period. With 4:07 left to play in the opening frame, Miami finally broke through junior goaltender Andrew Hammond on a shot from freshman Blake Coleman in front. The RedHawks took a 1-0 lead into the locker room, outshooting Bowling Green 9-7 in the frame.
Miami continued to pressure the Falcons in the second period, adding a second goal just 5:11 into the second frame. Junior Garret Kennedy took a feed from junior Curtis McKenzie in the slot, burying his first goal of the season.
The RedHawks would strike again in the closing minutes of the second period, on a tip-in goal from McKenzie in front. McKenzie's third goal of the season gave Miami a 3-0 lead heading into the second intermission.
Coleman added his second goal of the contest at the 14:33 mark of the third period, giving Miami the 4-0 lead, and the win.
Reichard's shutout is his first of the season, and marks only the second time this year Bowling Green has been held off of the score sheet. The first Bowling Green shutout was a 4-0 loss to Ferris State at home on Nov. 4.
The last time Bowling Green was held scoreless on the road to a CCHA opponent was against Michigan State last March, when the Falcons fell 2-0 thanks to 17 saves from Drew Palmisano.
The loss also marks the end of the Falcons three-game power play scoring streak, which totaled four goals in three contests.
The loss puts the Falcons overall record at 6-6-1 on the season, with a record of 1-6-0 in conference play. The win puts Miami's overall record at 6-6-1 on the year, with a record of 4-4-1-1 in CCHA play.
The Falcons are back in action tomorrow night in an encore match against Miami at 7:05. The Falcons look to defeat Miami for the first time since the 2007-08 season, when the Falcons beat then no. 1 ranked Miami 4-2 in Bowling Green.
