The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team snapped their five game losing streak Friday night, defeating Canisius 4-1. Four different Falcons lit the lamp in the contest, marking their highest goal output of the season since week one. Goal scorers Mike Fink, Camden Wojtala, Ryan Carpenter and Cameron Sinclair all registered an assist in the contest as well. The Falcons' three-goal outburst in the second period marked the most goals in a single frame this season for Bowling Green.
The Falcons finished the sweep of Canisius Saturday night, defeating the Golden Griffins 3-1. Senior Cameron Sinclair and freshman Ryan Carpenter each scored a goal for the second straight game, while sophomore Ryan Viselli added a tally that would eventually become the game winner. The win marked Bowling Green's first weekend series sweep since week two at Alabama-Huntsville.
The Last Time
The Falcons struggled against Miami during the 2010-11 campaign, losing all four meetings between the teams last year. Miami outscored Bowling Green 15-5 last season, including a 3-0 shutout at Bowling Green in November. This weekend marks coach Bergeron's second visit to Oxford since leaving Miami (assistant coach) and accepting the head coaching position at Bowling Green.
Introducing Cameron Sinclair
The weekend series against Canisius marked the return of senior Cameron Sinclair to the lineup. Sinclair registered a goal in both wins, and added an assist Friday night. Sinclair's points mark the first for Bowling Green's senior class (Cameron Sinclair and James McIntosh). Before Sinclair's three-point weekend, Falcon upper classmen (juniors and seniors) had only registered two points all season.
Williamson Assists
Although Sophomore Bryce Williamson failed to score a goal over the weekend, he still found a way to contribute. Williamson recorded two assists Friday night, marking his first helpers this season. Freshman Ryan Carpenter registered two goals over the weekend giving him five on the year, and a share for the team lead with Williamson.
Hammond Assists
Junior goaltender Andrew Hammond recorded an assist in Bowling Green's Friday night victory over Canisius. The assist is Hammond's first point of his career, which has spanned 58 games for the Falcons. Hammond recorded both wins in the weekend series, giving him a record of 6-4-1 on the season.
Power Play Working
The Falcons recorded a power-play goal in both wins against Canisius, extending their power-play scoring streak to three games. The streak is Bowling Green's longest of the season, and has improved their conversion rate to just over 14 percent. Bowling Green's three-game power play scoring streak comes after the Falcons failed to convert in the previous four games.
Camden Wojtala Success
Sophomore Camden Wojtala has carried the offensive load for a large part of the season, securing a team-lead 13 points so far in the early part of the year. Wojtala ranks fourth in the CCHA in scoring, and second in the CCHA in assists with 10. He only trails Notre Dame forward TJ Tynan (16) for the league lead. Seven of Wojtala's points have come on the rejuvenated power play, including two goals and seven assists. Wojtala currently has a healthy team lead in power play scoring, as Ryan Carpenter is the next closest Falcon with three power-play points.
Young Guns
The Falcon underclassmen have continued to shine in the early part of the season, accounting for over 90 percent of the offense so far. Senior Cameron Sinclair's multi-point games over the weekend were the first of the season for upperclassmen, who have only contributed eight percent of the points this year. The point breakdown for the Canisius series is as follows:
-Freshmen - 2 Goals, 4 Assists
-Sophomores - 3 Goals, 8 Assists
-Juniors - 0 Goals, 1 Assist
-Seniors - 2 Goals, 1 Assist
Still Quick
Sophomore Andrew Wallace continues to have success on the draw this season. Wallace has won an impressive 62 percent of his face-off attempts, which leads all Bowling Green centers. Fellow centers Cam Wojtala and Mike Fink have also shard in the success, winning over 50 percent of their draws as well.
Hello Offense
The Falcons scored seven goals over the weekend, marking their largest series total of the season. The Falcons are still tied for the lowest goal output in the CCHA, averaging only 2.17 goals-per-game. Bowling Green has found success in the second period however, scoring 13 goals in the second frame, which ranks third in the CCHA behind Michigan (21) and Northern Michigan (14).
Looking at Miami
The RedHawks have struggled so far in the early part of the season compared to early predictions. Miami was picked to finish second in the CCHA pre-season polls, but currently sit with a record of 5-6-1 overall record, with a conference mark of 3-4-1. Miami currently ranks seventh in the CCHA, and is no longer ranked in the USCHO poll.
Junior Reilly Smith leads the charge offensively for Miami, leading the team in goals (7) and points (9). The reigning CCHA Rookie of the Week Austin Czarnik has also had a strong season, contributing two goals and three assists on the year.
Senior Cody Reichard gets the majority of the minutes between the pipes for the RedHawks, playing in nine games on the season. The 2009-10 CCHA player of the year currently has a record of 4-3-1 on the season with a 2.33 GAA and a .906 save percentage.
Special teams have hurt Miami this season. The RedHawks rank near the top of the CCHA in penalty minutes per game (20), but are ranked almost last on the penalty kill (83.1 percent)
