Bowling Green, Ohio – For the second night in a row, the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team got production from its entire lineup and the Falcons beat Detroit, a team picked to finish second in the Horizon League standings, 67-61 Tuesday night.
The win is the second in two nights for Bowling Green as the Falcons host a subregional round of the Progressive CBE Classic. BGSU will play George Washington Wednesday night at 7:30 pm for the final game of the event and both teams enter at 2-0 during the subregional.
For the second consecutive evening, ten different players scored for Bowling Green and the Falcons found a way to overcome a five-point second-half deficit. In fact, the game was tied at 52-52 with five minutes to play before BGSU's veteran leadership took over down the stretch.
Detroit's Evan Bruinsma tied the score at 52-52 on a lay-up before Cameron Black's hook shot in the paint gave Bowling Green the lead for good. A'uston Calhoun, who came off the bench with 3:30 to play after sitting for almost 10 minutes, knocked down a three-pointer at the top of the key to put the Falcons on top 57-52 just 30 seconds after re-entering the contest.
Detroit edged back into the game and closed within two at 58-56 with 2:04 left. Bowling Green broke the Titans' full-court pressure and had a 2-on-1 break on the other end. Craig Sealey's alley-oop pass to Calhoun was low but Calhoun tipped it back to Sealey for a dunk and a four-point lead.
Jason Calliste made 1-of-2 free-throws with 1:33 left that cut the deficit to three and Detroit forced a turnover. The Titans' Evan Bruinsma, who was 2-for-3 on three-pointers to that point, missed an open look in the corner that would have tied the score and the Falcons made 7-of-8 free-throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Calhoun led Bowling Green with 14 points and added six rebounds. Thomas had 11 points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists and a blocked shot. Dee Brown, playing at the point guard position for large stretches of his 35 minutes, shook off shooting struggles to dish out a career-high eight assists. Sealey came up just shy of his first career double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
BGSU head coach Louis Orr also got production from an unlikely source as James Erger scored his first five points of the season in four minutes off the bench with both baskets coming at key moments. With Bowling Green leading 43-40 with 11:30 to go, Erger grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a tough fall-away jumper. Just a couple minutes later, BGSU again led by just three and, with the shot clock running down, he knocked down a long three-pointer that gave the Falcons some breathing room.
The Falcons actually jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first half as a Thomas jumper with 9:48 left gave Bowling Green a 17-7 lead. But BGSU scored only three points over the next eight minutes and Detroit took a 27-26 lead in the locker room.
The Titans extended the lead on a three-pointer to open the second half and Ray McCallum's three-pointer with 17:13 to go gave Detroit a 33-28 lead. Thomas answered on the next possession with his own three-ball, followed by back-to-back three's from Thomas and Brown to give Bowling Green a 37-34 lead. Bowling Green continued to lead until Detroit tied it up at 50-50 on a McCallum lay-up.
Detroit falls to 2-3 on the season and Bowling Green improves to 3-1, including a 3-0 record in the Stroh Center.
