With the win, the Falcons improve to 2-2 on the young season, and BGSU has won two games in a row. The Titans drop to 0-4.
BGSU scored the final 10 points of the game, holding Detroit scoreless for the last 3:23.
Steffen made four three-point field goals in the game, and was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc in the second half. Sophomore Jillian Halfhill joined Steffen in double figures in the scoring column, with a career-high 12 points in the win.
The Falcons, severely outrebounded in the game, trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half before cutting that deficit to nine points, 28-19, at the break.
Senior Jessica Slagle, who did not attempt a shot in the first half, scored nine points in the second period, with seven coming in the first four minutes as BG began a comeback.
For the game, Detroit had 56 rebounds to the Falcons' 31. Two UDM players, Shareta Brown and Yar Shayok, combined to match BG's rebounding total.
Brown, who entered the game averaging a double-double, solidified those averages with 16 points and an otherworldly 18 rebounds on the night. Shayok had six points, but added 13 boards and a game-high three blocked shots.
BGSU offset the disparity on the boards by taking care of the ball. The Falcons had only five turnovers on the night.
Trailing by that 28-19 halftime score, BGSU battled back in the second period, beginning with an 8-2 run in the first two-and-a-half minutes to get within three points.
The Brown and Orange took the lead, 37-35, on back-to-back three-pointers by Steffen, the second coming with 13:31 left in the game.
The lead traded hands several times, and the teams were tied, 42-all, when Steffen scored five-straight points. After sinking a pair of free throws with 7:29 remaining, the junior dribbled around the arc and drained another triple with 6:43 on the clock.
But, the Titans scored seven points in a row to regain the lead. The last three of those points came on an 'and-one' layup and free throw by Brown with 3:23 remaining, and the hosts were ahead by a 49-47 count. The Falcon defense, however, would hold UDM scoreless the rest of the way.
The Falcons tied the score with 1:46 remaining, when redshirt sophomore Alexis Rogers kicked the ball out to redshirt junior Danielle Havel. Havel hit a straightaway jump shot from just inside the three-point line, tying the score, 49-49.
The Brown and Orange forced a UDM miss, and Slagle grabbed the rebound and was fouled. She hit both ends of a one-and-one free-throw opportunity with 1:20 left, and the Falcons led for good.
On Detroit's next possession, Chanahl Putnam missed a jumper, and the ball went out of bounds to the Falcons with 56.1 seconds left.
Rogers and Havel hooked up again, with Rogers' entry pass finding Havel on the right side of the lane. The redshirt junior caught the ball, turned and shot in one motion, banking a layup off the glass and in. BGSU led by four points with 36.3 seconds remaining.
BG forced another miss, and Rogers tapped the rebound to Halfhill. Halfhill was fouled with 16.8 seconds remaining, and hit two free throws for a six-point lead.
Detroit brought the ball over midcourt, but Havel's defense forced Demeisha Fambro to turn the ball over with 11.5 seconds left. Halfhill would hit two more charity tosses to close the scoring.
BG started the game on a positive note, as Havel stole the ball from Putnam on the opening possession. Several quick passes, from Slagle to Havel to Halfhill, resulted in a layup by the latter.
But, Detroit would score the next seven points, including a Putnam three-pointer on a possession in which UDM got no fewer than four offensive rebounds.
Coach Curt Miller, looking for a spark from his team, inserted freshmen Jasmine Matthews and Logan Pastor into the game, and the move paid immediate dividends. Just 12 seconds after the duo took the floor, Pastor fed Matthews for a three-pointer from the left elbow, and Detroit's lead was 7-5.
The Titans increased the lead to 12-7 on a Lauren Allen long-range shot five minutes into the game, and the teams traded misses for the next three minutes, before Brown split a pair of free throws. Steffen ended a five-minute scoring drought for her team with a layup, cutting UDM's lead to 13-9, but a Fambro layup began a 10-0 run for the hosts. When Putnam converted a layup at the 6:49 mark, the lead was 14 points, at 23-9.
Rogers scored inside, but Allen answered with her second triple, and the Titans had a 15-point advantage, the biggest of the game, at 26-11. BG scored seven-straight points, with the first five coming from Steffen, as part of an 8-2 run to end the half.
After ending the half on an 8-2 run, BG began the second period in similar fashion. Slagle made a layup on the opening possession, and after Putnam answered at the other end, Steffen got to the line and split a pair of free throws.
Detroit turned the ball back over to BG, and Slagle took a Havel pass and drained a three-ball as the shot clock wound down. Two Rogers free throws cut the Titans' lead to 30-27.
Shayok made a shot in the lane, but Steffen hit a pull-up jumper and Slagle followed with a pull-up 'J' of her own, again coming with the shot clock nearing zero. UDM's lead was just a single point, 32-31.
Detroit scored the next three points before Steffen hit her back-to-back treys, coming just 37 seconds apart.
Havel had four points, all of which came on the two key baskets in the game's final 1:36. She also had five rebounds, four assists and four steals, leading BGSU in each of the latter two categories.
Halfhill went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line, more than doubling her previous career high of three free throws made. The Canfield, Ohio, native made all four of her tosses in the game's final 16.8 seconds.
The Falcons entered the game shooting 31.5 percent from the field on the year, and BGSU shot exactly 31.5% vs. the Titans. After going just 6-of-28 (21.4%) from the floor in the first half, BG made 11-of-26 shots (42.3%) in the second.
The BG defense held Detroit to just a 7-for-32 effort (21.9%) in the second half en route to a 27.7% success rate for the game. BG forced 17 UDM turnovers, and the Falcons had a 17-0 advantage in points off turnovers.
BGSU will take a break for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action with a pair of home games. The Falcons begin that homestand next Tuesday (Nov. 29), facing Western Kentucky University at the Stroh Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
