Baton Rouge, La. – The Bowling Green State University softball team opened its season Friday afternoon at the LSU Tiger Invitational, losing to Louisiana Tech 4-1. The Falcons struck first but a three-run third inning by the Lady Techsters was too much to overcome.
Both teams had five hits but Louisiana Tech hit a pair of third-inning homeruns off of BGSU freshman pitcher Erin Greenwalt. Greenwalt had a strong outing despite a rocky third inning, giving up just four hits over six innings, striking out five. Senior Zada Lines came on in the seventh and allowed one run and struck out two more batters.
The Falcons got on the board first in the bottom of the second as freshman Erika Stratton doubled in her first collegiate at-bat to lead off the frame. Lindsay Arney came on to pinch run and stole third. Her sister, Andrea Arney then drove her in with a sacrifice fly to right.
Louisiana Tech struck back in the third as Christina Gamboa walked and Janna Frandup followed with a two-run shot to put the Lady Techsters on top. One batter later, Allie Geisler hit a solo blast to make it 3-1. Louisiana Tech would add an insurance run in the seventh for the 4-1 victory.
Stratton went 2-for-3 in her debut for Bowling Green and sophomore Hannah Fulk also went 2-for-3 with a double. Freshman Katie Yoho had the only other Falcon hit, finishing 1-for-3.
Now 0-1, Bowling Green faces a tough task against No. 19 LSU, the home team, later Friday afternoon.
