Stellar senior shares conference weekly honor
Bowling Green State University women's basketball senior Tracy Pontius has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday (Feb. 21). Pontius earns the honor for the first time this season.
Pontius, a native of Morton, Ill. (Morton H.S.), averaged 23.0 points per game as the Falcons swept a pair of contests last week. She scored 17 points, a season high in MAC play at the time, in a 77-63 home win over Ohio University on Wednesday night (Feb. 16). Then, Pontius exploded for a season-high 29 points in BG's 73-61 win at Miami University on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 19).
On the week, Pontius shot 60 percent, going 15-for-25 from the field in the two games. She shot better than 56% from three-point land, making 9-of-16 triple tries on the week.
In the Ohio game, Pontius went 6-of-7 from the field, including a 4-of-5 performance from three-point range. At Miami, she had 10 of the Falcons' first 15 points of the game to give the team a lead it would not relinquish.
Pontius made five three-pointers in the MU game, moving into second place on the BGSU career list in that category in the process. Pontius now has made a total of 217 three-pointers in her career.
Pontius also went over the 1,300-point mark for her career in the MU game. She is averaging 12.0 points per game this year, and has made a team-leading 58 three-point shots.
Pontius shared this week's MAC Player-of-the-Week honor for the East Division, along with Kent State's Taisja Jones. Cassie Schrock of Eastern Michigan was named the MAC P-O-W in the West.
The Falcons of head coach Curt Miller, 22-4 overall and 10-3 in the MAC, are en route to Northeast Ohio for a Tuesday (Feb. 22) game vs. the University of Akron. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. at UA's Rhodes Arena. Following that game, BG returns home for the final two regular-season games, taking on Kent State University Saturday (Feb. 26) and the University at Buffalo on Wednesday, March 2.
