Falcons Fly To Athens For 2011 MAC Championships

A season'w worth of work under first-year Falcon head coach Petra Martin culminates this week when the Bowling Green State University swimming team travels to Athens, Ohio for the 2011 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Held over four days from Wednesday through Saturday (Feb. 23 to 26), the championship meet gives the Orange and Brown a chance to show just how far they've come during the 2010-11 season.
The Falcons improved their win total from one in 2009-10 to three this season, and the team came very close to winning two other meets. Most importantly, the team has veterans who know what it takes to win at the MAC's ultimate event.
As a freshman, Vicky Yu won the gold in the 200 butterfly event at the 2009 MAC Championships, vaulting her to first team All-MAC status. In that same race, Sarah Burston earned the bronze medal by finishing third.
In addition, graduate assistant coach Meg Richardson broke three BGSU records and earned second-team All-MAC status at last year's championship meet.
Among the Falcon contenders for medals in 2011 are Alexis Kain and Amanda Rom in the breaststroke events. Rom has the MAC's sixth-best time in the 100 breast and the fifth-best in the 200 breast, while Kain has the fifth-best in the 100.
Vicky Yu and Sarah Burston are also must-watch athletes again in the 200 butterfly. Burston has posted a top-ten time in the event for the season to date, while Yu's time of 2:02.43 from the Eastern Michigan Invitational ranks third in the MAC this year. The time is just one second shy of the league-best mark.
Falcon relay teams also threaten to earn medalist status. BGSU posted the MAC's third-best time of the year in the 200 freestyle relay at the EMU Invitational and posted very similar times in road dual meets at Toledo and Ohio.
