Oxford, Ohio – A'uston Calhoun scored 21 points and Dee Brown scored 17 in the second half but the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team lost a road Mid-American Conference game to East Division rival Miami 84-77 Saturday afternoon.
Bowling Green lost its fifth straight game, including fourth in a row in conference, to fall to .500 in league play. Miami inched closer to the top of the conference at 10-4 in MAC play.
Calhoun was a factor inside and out, making three three-pointers and scoring consistently inside. Brown made big shot after big shot as the Falcons fought back from a 15-point deficit with 9:22 to go to get as close as two in the final minute. Scott Thomas added 14 points and Jordon Crawford, in his first start since Nov. 26 against Niagara, had nine points and nine assists, his third consecutive game with at least that many helpers.
Playing in front of a national television audience on ESPNU, Bowling Green jumped out to an 8-3 lead but Miami used a 13-2 run midway through the first half to build a 21-12 lead. The Falcons got back within five on Calhoun's first three-pointer with 6:51 left but Miami extended the lead back to nine at the break at 42-33.
Miami capped a 10-3 run in the second half with a Quinten Rollins steal and lay-up with 9:22 left to make it 68-53. But the Falcons fought back one last time.
Nick Winbush made a pair of free-throws with 2:11 to play that gave the RedHawks a 78-68 lead but Thomas rattled home his only three-pointer of the night. Julian Mavunga, who finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists for Miami, missed a dunk and Brown connected from long range with 1:08 to go to make it 78-74.
Bowling Green fouled Orlando Williams and he made 1-of-2 free-throws with 54 seconds left but Brown came down and connected on another three-pointer to make it 79-77 with 38 seconds left.
The Falcons again fouled and Mavunga split the pair, giving Bowling Green an opening. Brown's jumper in the lane with 21 seconds left rimmed out and the RedHawks then made free-throws down the stretch for the win.
Miami shot 48 percent from the field, compared to 45 percent for Bowling Green. The Falcons did have 12 offensive rebounds, two more than Miami, but BGSU missed eight free-throws in the first half, which helped the RedHawks build the lead they never relinquished. Miami also made 7-of-17 three-pointers, becoming the fifth consecutive opponent shoot at least 40 percent on three-point attempts.
Miami improves to 15-14 overall and 10-4 in MAC play with the win. Bowling Green falls to 12-17 overall and 7-7 in league action. The Falcons will return home to host MAC leader Kent State Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. for Senior Night. The game will be televised on SportsTime Ohio.
