Stephenson picks up two awards at team banquet
Senior Katie Stephenson picked up a pair of awards as the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team held its annual banquet on Saturday evening (March 19) at the Sebo Athletic Center.
Stephenson earned the appropriately-named Katie Stephenson "Hustle" award, and also won the Leslie Dawley "Fighting Falcon" award. Seniors Alicia Almond and Jackie Tamerlano and junior Alyssa Zuccaro received most valuable player awards, while sophomore Emily Rothwell was named the team's most improved player. The "Fighting Falcon" award winner is selected by the coaching staff, while the other awards are the results of voting by the team members.
Stephenson earned the "Hustle" award for the fourth time in as many years, and also picked up the "Fighting Falcon" award. The "Hustle" award is given to the player who shows a consistent enthusiasm for the game and a tremendous work ethic, both at practices and during games. The latter award is given to a team member who, through words and actions, most accurately reflects the program's philosophy of 'Today I gave all that I have, for everything I left behind is gone forever.' It was renamed to honor former Falcon Leslie Dawley, who entered BGSU in the fall of 2002 and played with the team during that '02 season before passing away in November of that year.
Stephenson, a co-captain in 2010, was one of five BGSU players to start every match, and was second on the Falcons with 1851 minutes played. Stephenson also finished second on the team in goals, with four, and tied for second with 11 points on the year. She scored goals against Xavier, Cleveland State, Eastern Michigan and Miami, and had three-point games vs. both CSU and EMU. Stephenson assisted on the winning goal vs. Cleveland State. She was named to the Academic All-MAC Team in 2010, as she and Almond became the first-ever BGSU players to earn that honor three times. Stephenson played in 83 matches after arriving on campus in August of 2007, and finished with 27 career points on nine goals and nine assists.
Almond was named the team's MVP on defense. A co-captain along with Stephenson, she joined Stephenson on the Academic All-MAC Team for a third-straight season, and also was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team. Almond started all 20 matches, and played a team-leading 1901 of the 1908 total minutes on the season. She had three assists, including the first two-assist game of her career vs. Xavier. Almond also had an assist in the Falcons' win at Indiana State. She finished her career with a total of 10 points on three goals and four assists.
Tamerlano was voted the team's MVP in the midfield. She, like Almond and Stephenson, started all 20 matches in 2010, scoring five points. All five of those points came in MAC contests, as Tamerlano had goals against Ball State and Miami, and picked up an assist in the conference match against Eastern Michigan. In her career, she played in all 84 of BGSU's matches, making 77 starts. Tamerlano had 18 career points on seven goals and four assists as a Falcon.
Zuccaro was the team's MVP on offense for the third time in as many seasons at BGSU. She led the Falcons in scoring in 2010, and her 22 points were the most by a BG player since the 2005 season. Zuccaro led the Falcons in both goals (eight) and assists (six) as well as points. Fourteen of those points came in BGSU's 11 MAC matches, as she had five goals and four assists vs. conference foes. Zuccaro had five goals in a two-game span, and set a school record with 15 points in a four-game stretch midway through the season. 'Z' had her first career two-goal game in the Falcons' win at Indiana State, and also assisted on the winning goal in that match, for a five-point game. Then, she had her first collegiate hat trick in BG's win over Buffalo in the MAC opener. Her six assists included a helper on the game-winning goal vs. Kent State, two days after that UB match. Zuccaro has career totals of 40 points on 15 goals and 10 assists.
Rothwell earned the team's Most Improved Player award after playing in all 20 matches, making 15 starts. After playing a total of 76 minutes as a freshman in 2009, Rothwell was on the pitch for a total of 1547 minutes in her sophomore season. After coming off the the bench to play in the first five games of the year, she moved into the starting lineup for the remainder of the season, including all 11 MAC matches. Rothwell, fifth on the team in minutes played, had a pair of assists, coming in home wins over Cleveland State and Kent State. The latter assist came on the match-winning goal late in regulation.
The Falcons had four seniors -- Almond, Stephenson, Tamerlano and Alexa Arsenault -- on the 30-player roster in 2010.
