The Bowling Green State University women's golf team concluded a difficult beginning to their spring schedule on Sunday (March 6) with a 17th place finish at the 2011 Rio Verde Invitational.
The Falcons carded a final round of 340 at the White Wing Golf Course in Rio Verde, Ariz., and that score gave Bowling Green a total of 1018 strokes after previous rounds of 337 and 341.
Bailey Arnold, one of the two freshmen on BGSU's roster, scored an 84 over the final 18 holes to finish tied for 73rd with a total of 247 (83-80-84).
Sophomore Amy Ruthenberg earned her best round of the tournament on Sunday with an 83. The score was the best of the day among the five Falcon golfers, and it pushed Ruthenberg's total to 254 (84-87-83) for the weekend's 54 holes.
Marisa Glew scored 260 for the weekend after posting a 90 on Sunday. That score followed rounds of 83 and 87 on Friday and Saturday.
Placing just behind Glew was Paula DiFrancesco, who had a very consistent weekend. Her final score of 261 was divided into three equal rounds of 87.
Lauren Glew rounded out the Falcon contingent at White Wing and, as she did from Friday to Saturday, she improved her score by three strokes from Saturday to Sunday. Glew's final round of 86 gave her a total of 267 for the weekend.
Eastern Michigan captured the team championship, while Missouri State's Catherine Dolan earned individual medalist honors. Defending team champion Michigan placed third overall.
While the Rio Verde event was taking place, some individuals from the participating teams competed in a 36-hole weekend tournament on Saturday and Sunday in Verde, Ariz. at the Quail Run Golf Course.
Kelsey Benson, a freshman from Martinsville, Ind., placed third in the Quail Run Invitational after back-to-back rounds of 79. Her play included two of only ten rounds of sub-80 play among the entire group of 18 golfers.
Michigan's Jenn Cleary won the event with rounds of 76 and 75.
Bowling Green will next see action at the Longaberger Spring Challenge Cup, a match-play event held on April 2nd and 3rd.
