Bowling Green State University women's soccer head coach Andy Richards has announced the hiring of Kellie Evans as assistant coach. Evans comes to Northwest Ohio after two seasons at Illinois State University.
“I am delighted to have Kellie join the Bowling Green coaching staff, and am excited for her to get to work with our student-athletes,” said Richards. “She was at the top of my list from the very beginning to the very end of the search process, and I believe she will add tremendous expertise and a competitive spirit.
“Kellie has proven herself at both Oregon State and Illinois State to be an excellent coach, and I am looking forward to her bringing fresh ideas and a strong work ethic to our program.”
Evans helped Illinois State to a 12-7-1 record and both the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season and tournament championships in 2009. Evans and the rest of the staff were voted the MVC Coaching Staff of the Year. Last year, the Redbirds went 9-7-2 overall, advancing to the semifinal round of the conference tournament before being eliminated via penalty kicks.
Last semester (Fall 2010), the Redbirds achieved an Illinois State athletics department-record 3.69 grade-point average, with 23 student-athletes posting a semester GPA of 3.50 or better, including 11 that recorded a perfect 4.00 GPA.
“I am thrilled to become a part of the Bowling Green family,” said Evans. “I have a great deal of respect for Coach Richards and am thankful for the opportunity to join his staff and work in the MAC. Everyone I met with, from the players to the administration, is committed to the future of the women's soccer program. It is clearly an exciting time to be a part of Bowling Green Athletics, and I could not be more excited about the opportunity.”
Prior to her time in Normal, Ill., Evans was an assistant coach at Nichols School in Buffalo, N.Y. She went to Nichols after spending two years as an assistant coach at Oregon State University.
Evans gained coaching experience as a volunteer assistant coach at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala., in 2006, and also has coached at the high-school and club levels. She served as the head coach for Hillsborough County United U9 & U14 in Tampa, Fla., from 2006-07, and also was an assistant coach at Durant High School in Plant City, Fla. At the club level, Evans worked with the Florida Olympic Development Program (ODP). She earned her National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) National Diploma in 2010.
Evans was a standout soccer player at Auburn University from 2000-03, leading the Tigers to three NCAA Tournaments and the 2002 Southeastern Conference championship. Evans set the school record for assists in a season, with 13 in 2000, and ranks second in school history with 30 career assists. She was named to the SEC's All-Tournament Team, and was named a Freshman All-American by Soccer Buzz in 2000.
In the classroom, Evans was also an Academic All-SEC selection, made the SEC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll and earned a TOP Tiger Scholar-Athlete Award. A native of Brandon, Fla., she earned her bachelor's degree in public relations from Auburn in 2004.
