Jakubowski Named Academic All-MAC
April 19, 2011 | Men's Basketball
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green State University senior point guard Joe Jakubowski was one of five student-athletes named to the 2010-11 Men's Basketball Academic All-MAC Team Tuesday, as voted on by faculty athletic representatives at Mid-American Conference institutions.
A business major with a 3.33 grade point average, Jakubowski was selected to the team for the second time, receiving the honor in 2008-09 as well. He joins Akron's Steve McNees (4.00 GPA in physical education – sport science/coach), Buffalo's Byron Mulkey (3.371 GPA in higher education administration), Central Michigan's Jalin Thomas (3.65 GPA in sports studies), and Western Michigan's Alex Wolf (3.35 GPA in mechanical engineering) on the team.
Earlier this week, Jakubowski was named Bowling Green's Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year as well as the top scholar-athlete at BGSU among the senior class. He played in all 33 games for the Falcons this year, starting 25 at point guard. He played in every game in his career and his 110 starts are the most for a Bowling Green player in 23 years. He was named to the Cousy Award Watch List, given annually to the top point guard in the country, at the beginning of the year and led the Falcons by shooting 39 percent from three-point range. He completed his career ranked fifth in BGSU history in career assists (382), eighth in career three-pointers made (130), and tied for 10th in career steals (124). His 38.6 career three-point percentage just missed ranking in the top 10 in program history as well.
Akron's Mike Bardo, Eastern Michigan's Jay Higgins, Kamil Janton, and J.R. Sims, and Northern Illinois' Bryan Hall were each named to the honorable mention team.
The Academic All-MAC Team honors student-athletes who excel in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
