BGSU seniors earn honor for second-straight season
Two Bowling Green State University women's basketball seniors have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team. Co-captains Maggie Hennegan and Lauren Prochaska were selected to the team, which was announced Tuesday (April 19) by the conference office.
Both Hennegan and Prochaska are repeat selections to the team, having earned the honor in 2009-10 as well. The team is the result of voting by the faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. A total of 11 student-athletes were named to the Academic All-MAC Team, with an additional 20 earning honorable mention.
Hennegan was the only team member with a 4.00 grade-point average.
Akron's Rachel Tecca also was named to the team, as were Ball State's Emily Maggert and the Buffalo trio of Kourtney Brown, Jessica Fortman and Ashley Zuber. Central Michigan's Kaihla Szunko, Toledo's Melissa Goodall and Naama Shafir and Western Michigan's Brenna Banktson rounded out the team.
Hennegan, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio (St. Ursula), was a team captain for the second-straight year in 2010-11. Hennegan, who was voted a captain by her teammates before ever playing in a game at BGSU, started all 33 games in her final season. She finished fifth on the team in scoring and third in rebounding, with 8.6 points and 5.4 boards per game. Hennegan shot 50.5 percent from the floor, leading the Falcons in both field-goal percentage and blocked shots (36). She scored in double digits 11 times on the season, including eight times in the 16 MAC regular-season games. Hennegan was named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team as a senior, after being named to the second team in '09-10.
Hennegan, a health care administration major as an undergraduate, is currently in the MBA program at BGSU.
Prochaska, a native of Plain City, Ohio (Jonathan Alder HS), had another pretty good year in the Brown and Orange. A co-captain along with Hennegan, was named to the All-MAC First Team for the third consecutive year, and finished her career as the school's all-time scoring leader, with 2,290 points. In addition to points, she set school career records for free throws made (626), free-throw percentage (90.6%), three-point field goals made (310), games started (135) and consecutive games started (135). Prochaska ranks third in MAC history in career scoring, and is second in conference annals in three-pointers made. In her senior year, Prochaska averaged 17.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, leading the team in scoring and ranking second in boards. She also was second on the Falcons in assists, steals and blocked shots, and made an NCAA Division-I record 70 consecutive free throws early in the season. Prochaska, who started every game in her BGSU career, scored in double digits in 119 of her 135 career games. She was the only player on the 2010-11 roster to be named to the All-Anderson Team.
Prochaska, a sport management major, has a cumulative GPA of 3.23.
The Academic All-MAC honor is given to student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify for consideration, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior-college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
As mentioned, 11 players, including Hennegan and Prochaska, were voted to the Academic All-MAC Team. A total of 20 additional players, including seven Falcons, earned honorable mention. The list of BGSU players includes seniors Chelsea Albert, Jen Uhl and Kelly Zuercher, junior Jessica Slagle, redshirt sophomore Danielle Havel and true sophs Allison Papenfuss and Chrissy Steffen.
BGSU had the most total honorees of any of the 12 MAC institutions.
The Falcons of head coach Curt Miller posted an overall record of 28-5 and a MAC mark of 13-3. BGSU won the East Division title, capturing a divisional crown for the seventh consecutive year. BGSU won the MAC Tournament for the fifth time in the last seven seasons.
