Falcons Head South This Weekend For EKU Lady Colonel Classic
April 07, 2011 | Women's Golf
The Bowling Green State University women's golf team begins the home stretch of the 2010-11 season when they travel to Richmond, Ky. for the Eastern Kentucky (EKU) Lady Colonel Classic on Saturday and Sunday (April 9-10).
The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Arlington Country Club, which serves as EKU's home course. Par for the 18-hole course is 72, and it measures 5,801 feet.
The Falcons will face 12 teams from 11 different schools this weekend. The host Colonels will field two teams, while several other teams from the Ohio Valley Conference will compete. These include Austin Peay, Morehead State, Murray State, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech.
Bowling Green golfers will also get to test their mettle against two Mid-American Conference foes. Toledo will join the Falcons in Richmond, as will Ohio, as the Falcons get another opportunity to face the Bobcats. Arkansas State, Marshall and Southern Illinois round out the tournament field.
The first two rounds of the tournament are scheduled for Saturday, and the final 18 holes will be played on Sunday. The teams will commence play with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on both days.
This weekend's lineup is headlined by the Falcons' two freshmen -- Bailey Arnold and Kelsey Benson. Arnold leads active team members with an 80.69 per-round scoring average this season. She also won two of her three matches last weekend against Ohio in the Spring Challenge Cup. Benson will be playing in her first official team event since October's MAC Preview; however, in March at Rio Verde, Ariz., Benson placed third in the Quail Run Invitational after posting back-to-back rounds of 79.
Senior co-captain Lauren Glew will also compete; she is second in scoring average on the team with a mark of 82.42 per round. Rounding out the five-person team are Amy Ruthenberg and Paula DiFrancesco. Ruthenberg posted rounds of 83 and 84 at last month's Rio Verde Invitational, while DiFrancesco fired three straight rounds of 87. Marisa Glew will compete as an individual for the Falcons.
Live stats will be available HERE, through Golfstat.com. Complete results and a full recap will be posted after the conclusion of play on both days of the tournament.
Earlier this week, Falcon head coach Stephanie Young sat down for a few minutes to talk about this weekend's tournament, as well as the rest of the season...
