Slagle, Havel and Steffen to serve as tri-captains in Falcons' first year in the Stroh Center
Senior Jessica Slagle, redshirt junior Danielle Havel and junior Chrissy Steffen have been named tri-captains of the 2011-12 Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, head coach Curt Miller has announced. The three were selected in a vote of team members as well as the coaching staff.
“We are pleased with the selection of Jess, Danielle and Chrissy as our captains,” said Miller. “With nine first- or second-year players on our roster, we will rely on our captains for leadership more than ever. These three student-athletes have different leadership strengths and styles, and will complement each other well as they lead us into the Stroh Center Era.”
Slagle, the lone senior on the 2011-12 squad, played in all 33 games off the bench in her junior year. A native of Sidney, Ohio (Lehman Catholic H.S.), she was sixth on the 2010-11 team in scoring, and was the top scorer off the bench, with 3.8 points per game. Slagle shot over 42 percent from three-point range on the season, making 15 of her 35 long-distance tries. In her first three years, Slagle has averaged 3.6 ppg in 96 career contests, and has helped the Brown and Orange to three national postseason appearances, as BGSU was invited to the WNIT in her freshman year before winning the Mid-American Conference Tournament and heading to the NCAA Championships in each of the last two seasons.
Havel, like Slagle, played in all 33 games off the bench last season. In her first playing season at BGSU, the Carmel, Ind., native averaged 2.1 ppg and 2.1 rebounds per contest, while shooting better than 48 percent from the floor. Havel stepped up her game a notch during BGSU's MAC Tournament run, averaging 4.3 points and 2.3 boards while shooting 60% and giving the Falcons a spark off the bench in those three wins. Havel played one season at DePaul University before transferring to BGSU and sitting out the '09-10 campaign per NCAA transfer rules.
Steffen, also a native of Carmel, Ind. (Carmel H.S.), is the lone returning starter from last year's club. A high-school teammate of Havel's, Steffen started all 33 contests last winter, ranking third on the team in scoring with 10.4 ppg. She also was third on the Falcons in both assists (2.0 apg) and three-point field goals made (55), and led the Brown and Orange with 1.6 steals per game. In MAC games only, Steffen averaged 11.4 ppg to rank second on the team. She scored in double digits 19 times on the season, including a career-high 22 points in back-to-back home games, wins over Ohio and Kent State. Steffen also had 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the NCAA Championships first-round game vs. Georgia Tech. She averaged 3.3 ppg off the bench as a freshman in 2009-10.
“Jess is our emotional leader,” said Miller. “She has great leadership qualities and shows everyone within the program how to play with passion and pride. Danielle, who is basically a fourth-year player as well, brings a calming presence to our team. She will be able to provide valuable experience and leadership to an extremely young team. Chrissy is coming off a great year and will be one of the go-to players on the floor next season. We anticipate her stepping into a huge leadership role on a daily basis for our young and talented team.”
In the three years since Slagle arrived on campus, the Falcons have posted an overall record of 84-17 and a MAC ledger of 42-6. BGSU is 8-1 in MAC Tournament games in that time, and the Brown and Orange has gone 41-2 in home games over Slagle's first three years.
The Falcons are a combined 55-12, including a MAC mark of 27-5, since Havel and Steffen ventured to Northwest Ohio. The Falcons have made NCAA tourney trips in each of their first two seasons.
The Brown and Orange went 28-5 last year, winning a MAC division title for the seventh-straight season. BGSU has advanced to national postseason play in each of those seven seasons, including five NCAA Championships appearances in that time.
