Apthorpe, Stratton Named Papa John's Athletes Of The Week
May 02, 2011 | Baseball, General, Softball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Papa John's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are baseball player Cody Apthorpe and softball player Erika Stratton.
Male Athlete of the Week
Cody Apthorpe, a sophomore from Windham, Ohio, tossed his second complete game of the season on the road against Miami (Ohio) over the weekend. In his eight innings on the mound, Apthorpe allowed only one run on five hits while striking out five RedHawk hitters and walking only one. He retired the side in order three different times during the game and picked off one Miami runner to end an early threat in the first inning.
Female Athlete of the Week
Erika Stratton, a freshman from Las Vegas, Nev., had one of the most remarkable games in BGSU history. After going 38 games to start her career without a home run, she hit three as Bowling Green came back from a 5-0 deficit to beat MAC leader Ball State 7-6 in 12 innings. Her first home run put the Falcons on the board, while her second blast tied the game. She added a double in the eighth inning that helped to tie the game again, and her 12th inning home run was a walk-off game-winner. She is the first player in program history to hit three home runs in a game.
