BGSU Slated To Host Three Exhibitions and Four Duals at Cooper Pool This Season
Head coach Petra Martin and the Bowling Green State University swimming team have announced the schedule for the upcoming 2011-12 season. The schedule includes eight dual meets and an invitational prior to culminating with the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships next February.
The Falcons seek to improve upon last year's 3-4 record and sixth-place MAC Championships finish from 2010-11 by taking on six different MAC schools and non-conference rematches against Michigan State and Youngstown State.
The schedule begins with three exhibitions at BGSU's Cooper Pool. The first opportunity to watch BGSU swimmers occurs on October 7th, when the team holds its annual Orange versus Brown intersquad scrimmage. The team follows that with the Tom Stubbs Relays on October 14th. The exhibition slate concludes on the following day at 10:30 a.m. with the Jean Campbell Alumni Meet.
The Falcons open the regular season one week later, on October 22nd, when they travel to Fremont, Ohio for a triad meet against John Carroll and Oakland University.
Bowling Green's schedule heats up beginning on the following Friday. Starting on October 28th, the Falcons face four MAC opponents in 22 days.
That stretch begins when the Falcons host Ohio University, the defending MAC champions. BGSU defeated the Bobcats, 148-146, in Ohio's last trip to Bowling Green. Less than 24 hours later, the Falcons will be in Muncie, Ind. for a dual meet with Ball State.
One week later, BGSU swimmers will have redemption on their minds when Eastern Michigan comes to Cooper Pool for the second year in a row. In the 2010-11 season, the Falcons lost a hard-fought match with the Eagles, 158-136.
Bowling Green completes its first sweep through the MAC on November 18th with a trip to Akron, Ohio to face the Zips. The Falcons will search for a second consecutive win over Akron after defeating them at home in 2010.
After a trip to Kenyon, Ohio for the TPSC Invitational in the first week of December, the Falcons resume their dual meet schedule in January. The team travels to Buffalo, N.Y. on January 21st to face the Bulls, then returns home for back-to-back meets on January 27th and 28th against Youngstown State and Miami.
In January, Bowling Green also travels to Pembroke Pines/St. Andrews, Fla. and, while there, will face Michigan State in a dual meet. The dates for the trip and meet have not been set at this time.
The 2011-12 season concludes with the MAC Championships, which will be held this season in Akron, Ohio from February 22nd through 25th. Should any Falcons qualify, the NCAA Championships are scheduled to begin in Auburn, Ala. on March 15th.
Martin said, "This will be a pretty tough schedule, but we need to do this in order to be better prepared for the MAC Championships. We need to face some tough competition during the regular season so that we are ready to face everyone at the MACs."
"We have a couple of meets that are going to be back-to-back and a three-day invitational in December which will simulate a championship setting. We did not have that last year, and I could see that we were lacking that experience at the end of the season," Martin said. "I want to put the team through that experience early on, so they are ready to respond in February and are ready to perform under pressure."
