Three Falcons Named Mid-Major All-American Honorable Mention
May 04, 2011 | Women's Swimming & Diving
On Monday afternoon (May 2), CollegeSwimming.com released its annual Mid-Major All-American team, and the Bowling Green State University swimming team earned three spots on the honorable mention list.
The three Falcons named to the team were Alexis Kain, Amanda Rom and Vicky Yu. To earn their honorable mention spot, each athlete met the “B” qualifying standard for the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
At the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships, Bowling Green established new school records in four events – two relay and two individual. Kain set both of the individual records and took part in one of the record-setting relays.
On her way to earning second-team All-MAC status, Kain placed fourth in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the MAC meet. She broke school records in both, setting new standards of 1:02.05 (100 breaststroke) and 2:12.78 (200 breaststroke). She also swam with the 400 medley relay team that finished in a record 3:44.47, which also earned foruth place.
During the regular season, Kain swept the breaststroke events in five of BGSU's seven dual meets. In all, she finished first or second in 13 of the her 21 individual events and helped the Falcons win five relay events.
Like Kain, Amanda Rom found great success at the MAC Championships in the breaststroke, her primary event. Rom scored points in both the 100 and 200 yard version, and she met the NCAA's “B” qualifying standard in the 200. In that event, she finished fifth with a personal-record time of 2:16.16.
Rom won the 100 breaststroke in the Falcons' dual meet with Youngstown State and finished in the top three of 12 other breaststroke events during the regular season. She also assisted on four different relay teams that earned top-three finishes.
Yu is a junior who has previously been a MAC gold medalist and who holds BGSU's record in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly. In 2011, she secured her spot on this list when she swam the 200 butterfly in 2:00.42, a time which came within two-tenths of a second of her school record.
Yu scored more individual points at the MAC meet with a tenth-place finish in the 100 butterfly. She also swam with three Falcon relay teams, two of which placed fifth in their respective events.
Yu's third season with Bowling Green included three sweeps of the butterfly events in the team's seven dual meets. She won a total of 12 (out of 26) individual events during the year and finished second on seven other occasions.
A total of 180 female swimmers were named to the Mid-Major All-American Team or All-American Honorable Mention group. The MAC is one of several conferences designated as mid-major; others include America East, Atlantic Ten, Colonial Athletic, Horizon, Missouri Valley and Western Athletic.
