Alexis Kain And Amanda Rom Compete At U.S. National Championships

Fresh from earning qualifying marks for the 2012 United States Olympic Trials two weeks ago, Alexis Kain and Amanda Rom represented the Bowling Green State University swimming team this weekend at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships.

The meet, held in Palo Alto, Calif. at Stanford University's Avery Aquatic Center, serves as the selection meet for the 2011 Pan American Games, which will take place this October in Mexico.

On Thursday (Aug. 4), Kain and Rom swam in the 100-meter breaststroke preliminaries. Rom finished her swim in 1:12.23, which fell just 0.31 seconds shy of her personal record and beat her sectional preliminary time by over one second. Kain completed the 100 meters in 1:13.14, and she also eclipsed the standard she set at the sectional preliminary race.

The 200-meter breaststroke race took place on Saturday (Aug. 6). Rom, who fell just 0.33 seconds shy of the Olympic Trials standard at the sectional meet in the 200, finished this race in just 2:36.79. The time was less than a half-second shy of her career best and was just eight-tenths of a second shy of the Olympic Trials cut line.

Kain's time in the 200 (2:46.59) fell shy of the 2:42.26 standard she set two weeks ago in Cleveland; however, she later raced in a 100-meter breaststroke time trial. In that event, she broke her previous career best by six-tenths of a second and finished in 1:11.42.

BGSU head swimming coach Petra Martin is with Kain and Rom at the championship meet, and she is happy with the efforts of the Falcon duo. Martin said, "This meet is a great experience for them. I think they are learning a lot, and still being this close to their best times is very good."

Falcon swimming resumes practice later this month and debuts the 2011-12 season with the team's annual Orange versus Brown exhibition meet on Oct. 7th, and the team opens the regular season with a meet against John Carroll and Oakland University on Oct. 22nd.
