2012 BGSU Baseball Captains
Falcons Announce 2012 Captains
January 11, 2012 | Baseball
Bowling Green, Ohio—Head coach Danny Schmitz, along with assistant coaches Rick Blanc, Spencer Schmitz, and Justin Walker, has announced the trio who will serve as captains during the 2012 season. Junior Cody Apthorpe (RHP) will join fellow classmates Nick Bruns (RHP) and Matt Pitzulo (INF) in captaincy this season.
Last season, Cody Apthorpe served as the Friday starter, making 16 appearances. The Windham, Ohio native, Apthorpe struck out 50 batters, while only allowing the opponents to hit .286 during 2011. Of his 13 starts, he went the distance in two, compiling complete games in a 6-2 win over arch-rival Toledo, and a 1-0 loss at Miami (Ohio). The 6-5 Apthorpe will look to lead the Falcons this year, once again, on the mound.
Nick Bruns, who last year served as the Saturday starter, will primarily serve in the closer role this season. Bruns, a native of St. Henry, Ohio, appeared in 17 games, starting 12 of them, while compiling two saves. A season ago, he had arguably the best outing of any Falcon pitcher, going the distance in an 8-0 win over Northern Illinois. In that contest, Bruns struck out 12, while only allowing three hits.
Matt Pitzulo, a native of Poland, Ohio, started 47 games a season ago for the Falcons. Pitzulo saw time at both second base and designated hitter, while hitting .290. His 70 total bases were second on the team, while his 25 RBIs ranked him fourth among Falcon hitters. Pitzulo will enter 2012 as one of the Falcons primary bats in the lineup and a primary infield option.
The Falcons will begin the season in Nashville, Tenn. on February 18, 2012 when they take the field to square off against Kansas and Saint Louis. Falcon fans can follow BGSU baseball all season long, right here on www.BGSUFalcons.com or on Twitter: @WEAREBGBaseball.
