The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team will travel to Lexington, Ky., to compete in a four-team meet to open the new year on Saturday, Jan. 7. The Falcons will be competing with Kentucky (host), along with Oklahoma and Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The meet, which is called “Excite Night at the Kentucky Classic” is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in Memorial Coliseum.
The Falcons are coming off a 1-12 campaign in 2011, but have much to look forward to as they begin 2012. BGSU returns 10 letter-winners from last season, including Dawn Christman, Monica Eaton, Megan Harrington, Sunny Marchand, Megan Valentini and Danielle Wishart. All six of these returners competed in a majority of last year's meets, with Christman advancing to Regionals and Wishart competing at the British National Championships this past summer.
Jamilah Ali, Chelsea Anderson, Dana Herr, Amanda Lievendag, Gina Locigno, Rachel Perry, Alexander Porter and Maria Salvia are all newcomers this season, but are expected to compete for playing time.
Those eight new additions are not the only new faces to the BGSU gymnastics team in 2012. Head coach Kerrie Beach has a pair of new assistants this season in Ed Nyman and Chad Wiest. Nyman and Beach served as assistant coaches together for Ursinus College in 2000. Wiest joins the Falcons' staff after spending the past five seasons (2006-11) competing with the Illinois gymnastics program, earning All-American status twice.
Beach is in her fifth-year as the head coach of the BGSU gymnastics program. She is 23-34 in her career and has coached eight Regional qualifiers and one MAC Champion.
Oklahoma and Kentucky will enter Saturday's meet, ranked No. 4 and No. 23 in the country. Wisconsin-Oshkosh is not nationally ranked.
